COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Duke fencing program will be sending 12 student-athletes to this weekend's final North American Cup (NAC) in Columbus, Ohio.
Representing the 2016-17 squad Friday through Monday will be juniors Alec Ajnsztajn (epee), Haley Fisher (saber), Jan Maceczek (foil) and Dakota Nollner (epee), sophomore Bryn Hammarberg (epee) and freshmen Kendyl Bree (epee), Duncan De Caire (saber), Aidan McGinnis (epee), Lindsay Sapienza (saber), Ben Stone (saber), Agoston Walter (saber) and Jessica Whang (saber).
Veteran Fisher will hit the strips for the first time in competition during the 2016-17 campaign Friday in Division I Women's Saber and enters this weekend ranked 66th out of 145 participants.
Fisher is coming off an impressive year in 2015-16 as the Blue Devils' top women's saberist, compiling a 57-15 mark in the regular season. The Kennesaw, Ga., native brought home bronze at the ACCs, garnered eighth at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional and finished 18th at the NCAAs.
Rookies Sapienza and Whang round out Duke's competitors in Division I Women's Saber ranked No. 18 and No. 63, respectively. Registration for this event ends at 8 a.m.
Competition will continue Saturday with Ajnsztajn, Hammarberg, McGinnis and Nollner in Division I Men's Epee, with registration concluding at 8 a.m. Nollner is ranked 17th out of 326 competitors after earning a spot on the Division I-A Men's Epee podium at the December NAC.
Freshman Bree will be the lone women's epee fencer for the Blue Devils and will compete Sunday.
Sunday's events will conclude with Maceczek in Division I Men's Foil, with registration ending at 2 p.m.
This will be Maceczek's first collegiate competition of the 2016-17 campaign and he received the No. 43 seed out of 257 this weekend. The junior is looking to make a splash this season after amassing a 37-29 regular season record, placing fourth at the ACCs and ninth at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional last year.
De Caire, Stone and Walter will round out Duke's time in Columbus on Monday with Division I Men's Saber.
De Caire will compete in his first collegiate competition this weekend while Walter looks to improve after securing a spot on the podium at the November NAC. De Caire, Stone and Walter are the No. 57, No. 80 and No. 95 seeds, respectively, and registration will close at 8 a.m. for this event.
Stone will also be competing in Junior Men's Saber Saturday afternoon and is seeded 46th.
