DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke women's cross country team makes the trip to St. Paul, Minn., to compete in Saturday's Roy Griak Invitational. The highly competitive Jack Johnson Women's Gold field, which includes nine nationally ranked teams, is slated for a 2:35 p.m. (ET) start. The contest on Saturday marks Duke's first six-kilometer race of the season.
The nine ranked programs scheduled to compete among the field of 36 teams are headlined by No. 6 Boise State, No. 9 Michigan State and No. 10 Michigan. Thirteenth-ranked Penn State, No. 17 Iowa State, No. 20 San Francisco, No. 25 Minnesota, No. 29 Mississippi State and No. 30 Portland round out the teams that appear among the top 30 of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national coaches' poll. Ohio State is also receiving votes in the poll.
Freshman Lindsay Billings looks to continue her momentum from strong showings in back-to-back appearances. In addition to serving as Duke's top performer in each of the team's first two meets, the Johns Creek, Ga., native also crossed the line as the top freshman finisher while placing fifth overall at the Sycamore Invitational.
A trio of sophomores, Sheridan Wilbur, Liz Lansing and Gabrielle Richichi, will also represent Duke Saturday. Most recently, Wilbur placed 15th at the Sycamore Invitational to serve as the Blue Devils' third finisher, while Richichi finished less than five seconds behind Wilbur to place 16th overall. Lansing rounded out Duke's top seven at the Sycamore Invitational, finishing 22nd in her second meet of the year.
Freshman Sophia Parvizi-Wayne is scheduled to compete in her first collegiate competition Saturday. The London, England, native saw success prior to her Durham arrival, winning the Independent Schools Cross Country Championships twice, while also claiming numerous accolades on the track during her prep career.
The freshman tandem of Sarah Armstrong and Veronica Brtek will look to continue contributing for the Blue Devils as well, as each placed among Duke's top seven in the team's two early-season meets. Armstrong registered a fourth-place finish for the Blue Devils at the Duke Alumni Meet, while Brtek helped guide her teammates to a second-place finish at the Sycamore Invitational by placing seventh among the Duke contingent.
The Blue Devils last competed in the Roy Griak Invitational during the 2010 season, when the team posted a top-five finish.
