DURHAM, N.C. -- The 2016 Duke men's and women's cross country schedule was released Thursday morning, with the Blue Devils' upcoming slate featuring a season-opening home contest, three regular-season meets from the 2015 campaign and a return to the Roy Griak Invitational.
“With the new NCAA cross country qualifying period starting Sept. 9th, two weeks earlier than in past years, we thought it would be wise to take an early trip to Terre Haute, home of this fall's NCAA Championship in November, to preview that course and get an early taste of national-level competition,” head men's cross country coach Norm Ogilvie said. “Two weeks later, we return to a meet we've won before, the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, and then focus on training for most of October, which will culminate with the ACC Championships just down the road at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. If we are at our best for ACC's, we will have a great opportunity to score at-large points there with the fantastic distance depth in our conference.”
The Blue Devils begin competition Friday, Sept. 2, hosting the Duke Alumni Meet before traveling to Terre Haute, Ind., one week later to compete in the Sycamore Invitational Saturday, Sept. 10. Duke closes out its September slate of contests with the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., Saturday, Sept. 24. The men's team posted a first-place finish at the 2011 edition of the Roy Griak Invitational, while the Duke women's squad placed fourth overall at the same competition.
Duke is scheduled to compete in just two meets during the month of October, highlighted by the ACC Championships Friday, Oct. 28 in Cary, N.C. The conference meet returns to Cary for the first time since the 2009 season. Earlier in the month, the Blue Devils open competition in October by attending the Royals Challenge in Charlotte, N.C., Friday, Oct. 7.
The month of November begins with Duke competing in its final non-championship meet of 2016, as the Blue Devils travel to Cary, N.C., Saturday, Nov. 5 for the adidas Three Stripe Invitational. The final two meets of the season include the Southeast Regional Championship Friday, Nov. 11, and the NCAA Championships, which take place in Terre Haute, Ind., Saturday, Nov. 19.
The Duke men's and women's cross country teams reconvene Tuesday, Aug. 16 with the start of preseason camp.
