RALEIGH, N.C. – With finals wrapping up this week, a handful of Blue Devils were able to travel to Raleigh Friday for the Wolfpack Last Chance meet, hosted by NC State at Paul Derr Track. As the name implies, the event serves as a final regular-season opportunity for student-athletes to earn ACC and regional qualifying marks.
In the men's hammer throw, freshman Iyin Battle secured an automatic spot for the ACC Outdoor Championships with a personal-best toss of 177-5 (54.09m) to place fifth. Teammate Michael Foley, who registered an automatic-qualifying mark earlier this season, placed fourth after tossing the implement 186-7 (56.89m). Competing for Duke in the women's hammer throw, rookie Stefani Vukajlovic used a distance of 164-7 (50.17m) to finish eighth.
On the track, the Blue Devils added two season bests to its performance Friday. Running in the women's 5,000, graduate student Colleen Schmidt took the win with a 17:02.50 clocking, the fastest time of her career. Senior Allison Sturges recorded her fastest time of the season in the women's 800, clocking in at 2:12.16 to finish 10th overall.
The Blue Devils will return to competition next week with the 2016 ACC Outdoor Championships, scheduled for May 13-15 in Tallahassee, Fla. All three days will be aired live on ESPN3 starting at 6 p.m.
