DURHAM, N.C. – On the final day of the Battle of the Blues track meet at Morris Williams Stadium, two Duke records fell and nine event victories were claimed by Blue Devils to highlight Saturday's action for the home team. Senior Megan Clark bested her own school record in the women's pole vault, while sophomore sprinter Maddy Price broke her second record in as many weeks.
In the team standings, Michigan took home the women's trophy with 83 points, followed by Duke with 68 and North Carolina tallying 48. On the men's side, North Carolina secured the team title with 83 points, while Michigan and Duke finished second and third with 78.5 and 40.5 points, respectively.
Clark put together a career performance in front of the home crowd, setting both the Duke and facility records with a vault of 14-9.50 (4.51m), besting each of the previous standards by half an inch. In addition to the height being an all-time best for the Duke program, the vault currently ranks first among NCAA Division I vaulters this season and ties her as the sixth-best performer all-time in the women's pole vault during an NCAA outdoor campaign. Sophomore Madison Heath finished just behind Clark in second with a height of 13-9.25 (4.20m).
“I was really happy with today,” Clark said. “The crowd was huge and my teammates were there, so it was really exciting. We don't get a lot of home meets, so when we have them, we like to take advantage of them … I was happy with the result. I was a lot happier with the technique that I had this week and I'm really excited to go forward with that.”
On the track, Price set the school standard in the 200 a week after breaking the record in the 100. Crossing the line second overall, the sophomore out of Hillsborough, Calif., clocked a 23.48, surpassing recent graduate Elizabeth Kerpon's all-time mark of 23.69.
“[The race] felt really good,” Price said. “Coming off the 100 last weekend, I was feeling good and wanted to try and get [the record] in the 200, as well. I knew that Cindy Ofili, the really good sprinter from Michigan, was going to be in both of my races, so it was really helpful to have someone really fast to run against and push me to the finish. I wish I could have got her at the end, but it was still a really good race and I'm super happy with the time.”
Price contributed additional points for Duke in the 100 and 4x400, taking second in the 100 with a time of 11.74 before winning the 4x400 with junior Madeline Kopp and freshmen India Lowe and MacKenzie Kerr with a combined time of 3:40.21. In the one other relay event for the women, Duke ran the 4x100 uncontested as the team of Lowe, Kerr, Kopp and rookie Domonique Panton clocked a winning time of 47.40, the third-best time in the Duke records book.
In addition to the relay events, senior Olivia Anderson picked up a win on the track in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Anderson crossed the line in 10:21.86 to place first, a personal best by more than 30 seconds and the fifth-fastest time in school history.
