DAVIDSON, N.C. – Duke scored four first-inning runs en route to a 13-3 road victory over Davidson Tuesday evening at Wilson Field.
Duke (18-15, 6-9 ACC) churned out 18 hits, a season high. Six Blue Devils notched two or more hits in the contest, led by sophomore Peter Zyla's career-high four hits. Sophomore Justin Bellinger went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while classmate Jack Laboksy added two doubles and two runs scored.
Freshman Jimmy Herron extended his team-leading hit streak to seven games, going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two stolen bases. Fellow rookie Zack Kone added two hits and two RBI to aid the Blue Devil cause.
“We swung it really well,” said head coach Chris Pollard. “Pete Zyla, Zack Kone and Max Miller continued to give us really good at bats out of the bottom half of the lineup. Jimmy Herron continued to stay hot.”
Duke used seven different pitchers, starting with graduate student Kellen Urbon (4-1). Urbon tossed the first four inning in a planned split and did not allow a run in his outing. He scattered four hits, struck out two and did not walk a batter. He turned the game over to the bullpen with a 5-0 Duke advantage.
“We jumped out early, which when you're looking at a planned split that helps you be able to plan a little bit well from a pitching standpoint,” Pollard said. “[Nick] Hendrix, [Karl] Blum, [Ryan] Day and [Al] Pesto threw the ball really well out of the bullpen for us.”
Similar to the two teams' first meeting this season, Duke put multiple runs on the board in the first. Jimmy Herron and Chris Proctor kicked off the contest with a double and a single, respectively. A Davidson throwing error on a Jack Laboksy fielder's choice allowed the Blue Devils first run to score. Bellinger then lined a two-run single and Kone added an RBI fielder's choice.
Duke extended its lead to 5-0 on Herron's RBI single in the second, scoring Max Miller who doubled earlier in the frame.
In the fifth, a Zyla two-out RBI triple put Duke up 6-0 before Zyla scampered home on a wild pitch.
Davidson got on the board in the fifth with two runs on two hits. A leadoff walk started the rally before Andrew Pope lined his second double of the game to the right center gap. Brian Fortier added a sacrifice fly before Duke worked out of the inning.
A second Wildcat throwing error allowed the Blue Devils' eighth run to cross home in the sixth. Miller singled, stole second and ultimately scored on the miscue.
The Wildcats got a run back in the sixth, but Duke plated five runs on five hits in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Davidson freshman right-hander Allen Barry (1-2) allowed five runs on six hits over two innings to take the loss.
Next up, Duke returns to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park to take on N.C. Central at 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 13.
