DURHAM, N.C. – With the first day of the inaugural Battle of the Blues belonging solely to the men's and women's hammer throw competitors, freshman Stefani Vukajlovic paced Duke with a second-place showing as the Blue Devils matched up against North Carolina and Michigan at Morris Williams Stadium.
With just one of the 19 events scored in the three-way meet, North Carolina leads the women's standings with eight points, followed by Duke with three and Michigan with zero. On the men's side, the Wolverines top the team standings with nine points, while the Tar Heels (2) and Duke (0) rank second and third, respectively.
Kicking off the day with the women's hammer throw, Vukajlovic grabbed the early lead, notching her best throw of the day on her first attempt with a distance of 177-8 (54.16m). The freshman out of Banja Luka, Bosnia-Herzegovina, ultimately finished second overall to garner three points for the Blue Devils, trailing only North Carolina's Avana Story.
Senior Michael Foley led the Duke in the men's hammer throw competition, placing fifth overall to finish just outside of scoring range. Foley launched his best throw on his sixth and final throw, measuring a distance of 187-4 (57.10m). Also competing for the Blue Devils, freshman Iyin Battle and sophomore Jack Maher took sixth and seventh, respectively, with tosses of 160-1 (48.79m) and 155-5 (47.38m), both of which are personal bests.
The Battle of the Blues will conclude Saturday with the remaining events, starting at 1:30 p.m. with field events and 4 p.m. with running events. A live broadcast of the meet will be available on ESPN3 from 4-8 p.m. Admission to the meet is free to the public, as well.
