ATLANTA – Three Blue Devil divers reached finals events to round out Tuesday's action at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships, hosted by Georgia Tech at the McAuley Aquatic Center.
A day after garnering NCAA Championship qualification on the 3-meter springboard, freshman Evan Moretti advanced to the 1-meter final with an 11th-place finish in preliminaries (293.95). Teammate Josh Owsiany also earned a spot in the 1-meter final in 13th place (290.55).
Tuesday afternoon's final saw Owsiany improve upon his preliminaries award, scoring 301.75 points to finish 14th in the field (592.30). He started his list in strong fashion, receiving 54.60 points on a forward 2 ½ somersault and rounding out the performance with an inward 2 ½ somersault that netted an award of 55.80 from the judges.
Moretti also topped the 50-point mark on his first dive before scoring 65.10 points on a reverse 2 ½ somersault for a 3.0 degree of difficulty in the fourth round. He completed his list with 287.75 points for a total award of 581.70. That put him in 16th place.
Freshman Mackenzie Willborn advanced to finals for the second-straight day as well, taking 12th in the women's 3-meter preliminaries. In the event final, the Flower Mound, Texas native turned in four dives that received 50 or more points. Her highest-scoring dive of the day came in the final round, when she was awarded 55.35 points on an inward 2 ½ somersault for a 2.7 degree of difficulty. Willborn totaled 292.35 points in finals for a combined score of 576.25, placing her 12th.
Junior Kirby Quinn also competed in the women's 3-meter event, recording a score of 255.85 to come in 31st.
The NCAA Zone B Diving Championships reach their conclusion Wednesday with the men's and women's platform preliminaries and finals. Action begins at 11 a.m. in Atlanta.
