“Well, very first thing, I'd like to congratulate Roy [Williams] and his kids on the win and the regular season title. They did a great job. They're a heck of a team and they share the ball. Obviously, one of the things they do really well is rebound the ball and they did that at a very high level. So, congratulations. I think we both had very difficult schedules in the conference and for them to navigate that, that's one of the reasons for the regular season. It's a little bit different now, but for Carolina to win it. They're going to have a tough media schedule, just like we are, that says even more. That says even more. For [Marcus] Paige to hit the free throws, you know what a great career he's had. Again, he came through for them because our kids put us in a position where we had a chance to win the game and he stepped up. You know, [Brice] Johnson is a first team All-American. In this league, you take a look at the teams that had double-figure wins and you take a look at the teams that have nine wins, we have so many good teams. So many good teams and that's why, as we go forward, I would not be shocked if a couple of our teams get to be number one seeds because of how good they are. They're just really good and they are, North Carolina is. We've become a really good team. I'm not saying at that level, but we didn't start out well tonight. We didn't share the ball well and they were hitting on all cylinders. Then obviously the foul trouble to Brandon [Ingram] hurt us. I would have put him back in in the first half with two, but then we started, you know, we cut it to three and then in the last two minutes, I thought if we could get out of there with six or eight points behind and start the half. Overall, we kind of managed to hang in there after what was not a fluid half for us. In the second half, our kids just battled like crazy. With all the drive, we've got to get to the foul line more. Grayson [Allen] gets 28 shots and has two free throws. Whatever, we still have to get to the foul line, which is what we've done a lot this season until lately because we don't have an inside game. So, the three-point shooting is complemented by the free throws and that is who, that's who we are. Tonight wasn't conducive to that. Their rebounding was fantastic. I mean, Brice [Johnson] gets 21 and they more than doubled our rebounding. And still we had a chance to win. I mean, we were right there. I thought a pivotal play was when we got a rebound and was ahead and they made a good defensive play and we lost the ball in transition. They got two quick buckets at 49-49 and you just kind of gave them four points when we had the chance to take the lead. But, it's a heck of a game. It was a heck of a game. Our kids have fought like crazy and they did tonight. Luke [Kennard] did a great job coming off the bench for us. Now we go on, and we go on from here.”
On the regimen moving forward:
“Regimen seems so, hopefully we don't have a regimen. We'll take tomorrow off. Still, we've got to get rested. We don't have any depth. Have something on Monday and leave Tuesday because we'll play, I think, Wednesday afternoon. So it comes real quick for us. Again, just like for this game, our practices aren't, we have a hard time practicing because we've got to get them fresh. Even Friday, we just had a little bit and Marshall [Plumlee] tweaked his ankle just a little bit and Grayson's foot. They were fine, you know they played. We don't have anybody to replace those guys, so we have to figure out a regimen of toughness without physicality. If you want to tweet me on that if you have any suggestions, but again, that's what we've been doing so I'm not feeling sorry for us.”
On the possibility of four games in four days:
“Let's just play the first game. You know, let's just play the first game and if we win, we get to play the second game. Can you assure us of getting a fourth game? Okay. In the military, one of the expressions they have, a need-to-know basis. You know, and we don't need to know that. Let's just figure out what we need to know about Wednesday's game.”
On the release about Amile Jefferson:
“We waited as long as we could to see if Amile [Jefferson] could come back. We didn't want, we knew a day or so ago, but we didn't want to put it out, like that be the story of the game. He just can't, again, jump. So, we'll put in for the medical hardship waiver which is, it's not like you can say he's going to redshirt, you have to put in for it, but he should be kind of a rubber stamp because he hasn't played over 30% of the games. The guys on the team know that. They were great about it.”

“We knew they would get their fair share of rebounds, but we didn't expect to be outrebounded like that. That's just hustle, kind of us just fighting through whatever we were going through. Our first half didn't help at all. We just have to shore up some things, learn from this loss, and at the end of the day, we have to fight. Rebounding isn't a skill, it's just wanting it more and we have to want it more. They just wanted it more. We weren't able to fight through whatever we were going through, and it showed on the rebound margin.”
“We fought. With everything that we did to lose that game for ourselves, we were able to muster up enough stops to make shots at the end and things like that. But that's kind of how the team is and how the season's been. We've been fighting from day one, and we just have to continue to fight but know that that fight includes rebounding.”

On Duke getting outrebounded 64 to 29:
“We're a team that's going to fight and we put ourselves in a good position, but at the end of the day, when [North Carolina is] playing volleyball at the rim, we're not getting rebounds. They were getting three or four shots a possession just because we couldn't rebound, and you're not going to win a ballgame like that. We went to that 2-3 [zone defense] most of the game, and Marshall [Plumlee]'s the one down there hitting the big guys, boxing them out, making sure they don't get to the glass, and we didn't fight and match his physicality down there and go back and get the boards. We can't rely on him to get 20 boards a game. We need to come back and grab some.”
When asked what allowed North Carolina to pull away after Duke had tied the game at 49 midway through the second half:
“I really think it's offensive rebounds. They hit a couple of outside shots, but for the most part we were getting killed in the paint. That's the story of the whole game – not just that one stretch.”
When asked about North Carolina's defensive strategy against him:
“They did a good job defensively, and I missed a lot of easy stuff that I felt like I should've made. But you can't worry about the shots that you miss. It's just 'next play.'”
“We just have to move on like we've moved on all season. It's an emotional game but we're starting another season – that's the postseason. We get to start fresh a little bit and try to start off with another win.”

“We didn't attack the boards as a team. We talk about gang rebounding and five guys going to the boards, and I don't think we did that at all. Of course, [North Carolina] is one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country, but that's inexcusable to get outrebounded like that.”

“Just sitting on the bench for so long, you try to observe things. I knew when I got back in I had to be aggressive. [We] made a push at the end of the first half and I just tried to keep it going.”
On Duke playing zone defense for a significant portion of the game:
“I think the switch-up to the zone kind of makes a team stand still, so we tried to switch up the defense and just try to stand them up.”
On the upcoming ACC Tournament:
“We have to play one more extra game and we have to get there early, but that may be good for us, just to get our legs under us. [We have to] just attack the next game better than we did this game, make a gameplan and execute it.”

“Needless to say it feels a heck of a lot better than it did a couple of weeks ago. I will say one thing before I start talking about the game; Marshall Plumlee is out there now, I'm assuming with the senior night and that young man has had a great, great season for that club. I recruited a little bit of his brothers and I recruited him. I think he is a fantastic young man, he played 37 minutes tonight and in my opinion he was the reason they won the game over at our place. He played the last 14 minutes with four fouls and challenged everything we had around the basket. I'd like to congratulate him. It is a wonderful feeling in our locker room right now; there is no question about that. Sometimes you say some things that work and sometimes you don't. I reminded our guys of 2012 when Austin Rivers made the big three at the end of the game at our place and we thought we had the game won, should have had the game won and we didn't. Then we came over here and we played very well, we played great, and ended up winning the game over here. I told them that it has been done before and we can do it again. I tried to give our kids confidence; I knew one team that could come in here on senior night, play great and win, and that was us. The backboards and the inside area was huge for us. It was not as huge as it needed to be when we played at our place. Rebounds were 64 to 29 and we had 27 offensive rebounds. We batted it around like volleyball around the basket three or four times, two possessions we had six shots, we were 0-for- 6. We shot 28 percent the second half, but we had so many opportunities around, then they cut it to one or two the first half with a nice run and we took it back out to eight or 10. They cut it to one in the second half and I told our guys during the timeout that they had done that in the first half, and we responded so let's respond right now. Justin Jackson made two free-throws. Brice [Johnson]) scored a couple of buckets in that time period. Joel Berry made a three. Then down the stretch Theo [Pinson], Joel, and Marcus [Paige] were eight-for-eight from the free-throw line to finish the game. A lot of good things in the locker room, it is a fun locker room right now. I thought that it was very fitting that Marcus could not throw it in the ocean, but he went to the free-throw line and made four straight free throws us. ”
On the play of Kennedy Meeks:
“Kennedy [Meeks] was big today. Isaiah [Hicks] was pressing himself too much; he wanted to do too much. Isaiah has been fantastic for us all year long, but never seen a game where he is two-for-six with four fouls. Kennedy was big early; Kennedy was big late rebounding the ball. He could have even scored more, but he couldn't get it to stay in the basket. Fourteen rebounds for Kennedy and 21 for Brice Johnson. I have been on those two guys all year long because I want more out of them effort wise, intelligent wise, effort, effort, effort. Tonight; 12 [points] and 14 [rebounds] for Kennedy, and 18 [points] and 21 [rebounds] for Brice. Brice Johnson offensively has done some things that have been done very seldom in my years as a head coach; rebounding the ball and scoring the ball. I think I have said something about everybody that played today so this was a North Carolina win. ”
On comfort level of Marcus Paige taking free-throw shots at end of the game:
“You never know what your comfort level should be, but if I had to pick anybody in the country to step to the line in that situation, I wanted Marcus Paige over anybody else; he was pretty doggone good.”
On looking for Brice Johnson down the stretch:
“We looked for him the first minute of the game, the 19th minute of the game, and the 32nd minute of the game. He, Kennedy, and Isaiah were about to drive me crazy; because I wanted a flash in the middle of the zone even harder and we sort of sashay in there. I told them at one of the timeouts that they were short-arming their shots; shoot the basketball. It is great coaching; I mean this is how silly the game is. I said 'If you want to take a shot, be tough enough to make the dang ol' thing,' and you know that is silly as it can be, but that is exactly what I had said.
