HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.—Twelfth-ranked Harvard used an 8-0 run over the span of the second and third quarters to upset No. 3 Duke 14-9 in non-conference men's lacrosse action this afternoon at Hofstra University. The Blue Devils were led on offense by Justin Guterding's six points, while goaltender Danny Fowler had a season-high 14 saves.
Duke falls to 4-2 overall on the year with both losses coming against ranked opponents, while Harvard remains unbeaten at 4-0. The Blue Devils went scoreless for a span of 30:39 over the course of the second and third quarters as Harvard started to pull away. Jack Bruckner added three goals and an assist for Duke.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with Duke and Harvard trading goals in the first quarter before the Crimson went on a six-goal run in the last half of the second quarter for a 10-5 lead. Devin Dwyer had three goals and an assist in the run, en route to his six points overall on the day.
Chad Cohan opened the scoring for Duke just 54 seconds into the game off an assist from Guterding. Harvard answered four minutes later to tie the game as the squads traded goals en route to a 3-3 tie at the first quarter break.
Deemer Class and Guterding both added goals in the first quarter, but Harvard always had an answer for the Blue Devils, who only had 15 shots in the opening frame. Class finished with two goals and two assists and became the second midfielder in Duke history to score 100 career goals.
Duke grabbed its first lead, 4-3, since it was 1-0 on a Guterding goal at 13:01 of the second quarter. The Crimson and Blue Devils exchanged tallies before Harvard went on its six-goal run to take a five-goal lead at the break.
The third quarter was a change of pace after the 15 goals scored in the first half. Duke was held scoreless for the first time of the year as the Crimson extended its lead to 11-5 heading into the final period.
Fowler was outstanding in goal in the third stanza, making four saves, including many on the doorstep to keep the Blue Devils within striking distance.
After the Crimson extended its lead to seven, 12-5, to start the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils ended their scoring drought at 30:39 on a marker from Guterding. That tally sparked a three-goal run for the Blue Devils as they cut the lead to 12-8 with seven minutes to go.
Duke was never able to close the gap more as Harvard iced the game with its 14th goal with just over two minutes remaining.
The Blue Devils took only 29 shots in the game, tying for the lowest since they fired 29 in a win over North Carolina in 2013.
Robert Shaw finished with 10 saves in goal for the Crimson. Harvard edged Duke in the faceoff battle, winning 14-of-27, while the Blue Devils won the ground balls 38-36.
