DURHAM, N.C.--The University of Richmond scored the game's final four goals to upset the No. 7 Blue Devils 12-10 in non-conference men's lacrosse action this evening at Koskinen Stadium. The loss is the second straight for Duke as the Spiders are off to their best start in program history.
The setback for Duke was its first loss to an unranked opponent at home since a 9-6 loss to Harvard Feb. 21, 2009. The Blue Devils never led by more than two goals and failed to score in the fourth quarter after taking only five shots. For the second straight game, Duke failed to score in a quarter.
Myles Jones paced the Blue Devils offense with a goal and three assists, while Justin Guterding and Chad Cohan both had hat tricks. Guterding's second goal marked his 100th career point as he became the fastest Blue Devil to 100 career points in Duke lacrosse history. Kyle Rowe was outstanding in his first game back at the X, winning 18-of-24 faceoffs and picking up 12 ground balls.
Duke grabbed the early 2-0 lead on a pair of goals from Guterding, but Richmond answered with consecutive scores to start the ensuing seesaw battle that featured seven ties and five lead changes.
The Spiders grabbed their first lead of the game on an Alex Hatem goal at the 3:27 mark of the second quarter before Brad Smith knotted the contest 6-6 at the break.
Jones opened scoring coming out of the locker room to give Duke the 7-6 lead, but the Spiders refused to go away as Mitch Goldberg netted the third of his team-best four goals to tie the game 8-7.
Duke and Richmond traded leads over the next five minutes as the Spiders went ahead 8-7 midway through the period. The Blue Devils, sparked by a Case Matheis marker at 7:40, scored three unanswered for the 10-9 lead heading into the final period.
Goldberg found Anthony Faraino early in the fourth quarter to tie the game and Teddy Hatfield and Cory Palmer added scores to put the Spiders up 12-10 with five minutes remaining.
Duke senior midfielder Deemer Class had a shot denied by the crossbar and Richmond goaltender Benny Pugh made two fourth-quarter saves to hold off the Blue Devils for the win.
Goldberg finished the night with a game-high five points, while Pugh posted 12 saves in the victory. Duke goaltender Danny Fowler made nine saves in his 60 minutes of action.
The Blue Devils are on the road again this weekend, traveling to No. 9 Loyola March 12. Faceoff is set for 11 a.m., on CBS Sports Network.
