WILMINGTON, N.C. – Entering the final day of the Seahawk Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Landfall with a one-stroke lead, the No. 20 Duke men's golf team conquered windy conditions to card a 282 (-6) over the final 18 holes Monday to secure the team victory by seven strokes. The win marks the second victory in as many weeks for the Blue Devils after placing first at the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate last weekend.
The Blue Devils finished the two-day competition with a 36-hole total of 562 (-14) to finish atop the team leaderboard, followed by UNC Wilmington (569), Army West Point (576), Campbell (580) and James Madison (589) rounding out the top five.
“[The team] showed great resolve,” head coach Jamie Green said. “The wind was blowing 15 miles per hour steadily and gusting at times, so when you're in amongst the trees, it was tough to predict how your golf ball might get hit by [the wind] … We made plenty of birdies today on a golf course that was pretty challenging. I'm just very excited for the guys to be in a position with a lead, and then maintain it.”
Leading the Blue Devils, junior Matt Oshrine rode the momentum of a spectacular round of golf Sunday to capture the individual title at the Seahawk Intercollegiate. After posting a 68 (-4) yesterday to hold a share of the lead heading into Monday, Oshrine closed out the final 18 holes with a 69 (-3) to finish with a two-stroke advantage at 137 (-7).
“We played a lot of golf in a lot of different conditions, so I felt like everyone was very well-prepared,” Oshrine said. “I played this golf course last year and had success … I had a good sense of how to score, and I just kept the ball in play off the tee and putted pretty well.”
Oshrine's performance matched the tournament record for 36 holes, tying Will Starke of South Carolina's showing from March 16, 2014. It was also the second consecutive top-two finish for the junior out of Baltimore, placing second at last week's Cape Fear National Intercollegiate.
“He's a very smart player,” Green said. “He just doesn't lose too many shots to poor strategy. He puts himself in really good positions, he doesn't press the envelope when he doesn't need to and he hit a lot of really solid golf shots on this spring break trip. His touch around the green is tremendous. He's as good of putter – in terms of feel – as probably anybody I've coached.”
Joining Oshrine in the top 10 and helping Duke claim the team title, freshman Alex Smalley and sophomore Adam Wood finished tied for third and tied for sixth, respectively, with final scores of 140 (-4) and 142 (-2). With both tied for seventh after Sunday, Smalley tallied consecutive rounds of 70 to earn the top-three placing, while Wood paired his 70 from Sunday with a 72 to move up one spot.
Rounding out the Duke lineup, sophomore Jake Shuman fired rounds of 72 and 73, respectively, to card a 145 (+1) and tie for 16th, followed by junior Max Greyserman capping the event with a final-round 71, bouncing back from his first-day 80 to climb 28 spots to tie for 42nd with a 151 (+7).
The Blue Devils also had four golfers compete individually, led by sophomore Ben Silverman and junior Alexander Matlari tying for 16th and 21st, respectively, with scores of 145 (+1) and 146 (+2). Freshman Shrish Dwivedi shared 33rd with a final 148 (+4), while junior Andrew Bieber tied for 40th with a two-day total 150 (+6).
“This was a special trip for us,” Green said. “We're on spring break with all nine guys on our team. It was really good to have the bonding and camaraderie and guys cheering each other on … I know they're feeling good as a whole nine-man group about each other's games.”
The Blue Devils will return to action with the Hootie at Bull's Bay Intercollegiate, scheduled for April 3-5 at Bull's Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, S.C.
