PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 20 Duke men's golf team had three players post red numbers on Saturday as it finished the first round of the weather-shortened Princeton Invitational with a 12-stroke lead on the field.
The Blue Devils shot 274 (-10) as a team, a dozen shots clear of second-place Columbia with 18 holes to play. The tournament was originally slated for 54 holes but was shortened to 36 due to inclement weather.
“These are probably the most challenging conditions we've seen in a long time with the cold, the wind and the rain, but the guys were mentally tough,” Duke assistant coach T.D. Luten said. “We have a good team and we were able to get off to a good start. This golf course sets up well for us because we drive the ball well, and we were able to use the angles to set ourselves up for good opportunities.”
Sophomore Jake Shuman birdied the first two holes of the day and never looked back on his way to a career-best 65 (-6) on Saturday. Shuman was five-under on the front nine and only carded one bogey on the day en route to the individual lead.
“We're really proud of Jake,” Luten said. He's been working hard on his whole game and hasn't necessarily gotten the results he's wanted until recently. His success today was definitely earned. He's hungry and I think he'd say he could even play better than he did today.”
Shuman's teammates are nipping at his heels for the individual medal, as junior Max Greyserman and freshman Alex Smalley are both tied for second after shooting 68 (-3) on Saturday.
The Princeton-area native rolled in six birdies on the day, finishing strong with birdies on the day's final two holes.
“This was certainly a bounce-back round for Max, and we're happy for him,” Luten said. “He's an amazing striker of the ball and he took some great swings today. He really played well today – maybe he has some good vibes playing close to home.”
Smalley was able to rally after starting the day two over through five holes, playing holes 6-18 at five under par with no bogeys. Like Greyserman, he posted birdies on Nos. 17 and 18.
“Alex just did what he's been doing all year,” Luten said. “He was calm but aggressive today. He just always stays poised. His first year as a member of our program has been impressive.”
Sophomore Adam Wood carded a two-over 73 on Saturday to finish the day in a tie for 20th, while junior Matt Oshrine shot 78 (+7) to finish the day in a 60th-place tie.
Junior Alexander Matlari, playing as an individual, put himself in a position to chase the individual title on Sunday with a two-under 69 on Saturday. Matlari totaled four birdies against just two bogeys on the day.
Final-round play is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. ET Sunday. Live scoring for the Princeton Invitational is available at golfstatresults.com.
