CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Duke men's golf junior
Ethan Evans posted the low round by any player on the course, signing for a 5-under, 65, in the third round of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate on Sunday, April 13. As a team, the Blue Devils shot a 3-over, 283, and finished in fifth place overall at 15-over, 855, for the tournament. Evans' 5-under effort vaulted him up 23 spots on the individual leaderboard and into a tie for fifth at 1-under, 209.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- As a team, Duke finished at 3-over, 283, and moved up one spot to finish in fifth place overall.
- Ethan Evans paced the Blue Devils' lineup with his 5-under, 65. The junior opened the day with a 4-under on the front-nine, rolling in pairs of birdies on holes No. 3 and 4 and No. 7 and 8. His lone bogey of the round came on No. 10, before quickly responding with a birdie on the par-5 12th. Evans closed with a final birdie on No. 18, hitting his approach to inside of two feet and tapping in to complete his 5-under round.Â
- Luke Sample signed for a 2-over, 72, on Sunday. After beginning his day with a bogey on the par-3 first, Sample moved under-par with an eagle on the par-4 fourth, after driving the green to within five feet. Back-to-back bogeys on No. 6 and 7 sent Sample to the back-nine at 1-over, where he answered with consecutive birdies on the 11th and 12th holes. The senior placed his tee shot on the par-3 17th to less than five feet for his third birdie of the back-nine, before a closing eight on the par-4 18th ended Sample's day at 2-over. For the tournament, Sample shot an 8-over, 218, and tied for 42nd place.
- The duo of Kelly Chinn and Bryan Kim each shot a 3-over, 73, in the third round.
- Chinn worked through three dropped shots on the front-nine, rolling in birdies on the par-3 third and par-5 eighth, to turn at 1-over. Back-to-back bogeys on No. 12 and 13 were immediately erased with back-to-back birdies on No. 14 and 15, before Chinn played the final three holes at 2-over to finish at 3-over for the day. The senior shot a 4-over, 214, over the three rounds and tied for 19th on the individual leaderboard.Â
- Kim played steady golf throughout the day, posting 13 pars to go with a lone birdie, on No. 11, while scattering four bogeys across his round. Kim finished at 5-over, 215, overall and tied for 22nd.Â
- Daniel Choi closed out Duke's lineup with an 8-over, 78, and ended the event at 16-over, 226, in a tie for 68th.Â
- John Hiller led the four Blue Devils competing individually with his 1-over, 71, on Sunday. The freshman tied for 60th with a 12-over, 222.
- John Peters signed for a 2-over, 72, en route to a tie for 45th overall at 9-over, 219.
- Sam Mukherjee and Oliver Mukherjee shot a 5-over, 75, and 6-over, 76, respectively, to round out Duke's representation. Sam Mukherjee tied for 63rd overall at 15-over, 225, and Oliver Mukherjee logged a 79th-place finish at 24-over, 234.Â
NOTES
- Duke ended the tournament as the second-best scoring team on par-3's, trailing only Kennesaw State.
- Ethan Evans' 65Â matches his career low for total score, which he had previously accomplished twice.
- Evans has earned a top-five finish in two of his last three events and has finished inside the top five in three total events this season.
- Evans and Kelly Chinn were two of just three individuals to shoot under-par on the par-3's, with both Blue Devils shooting 1-under on those holes.Â
- Chinn tied for 19th on the individual leaderboard and has registered back-to-back top-20 finishes.
- Bryan Kim rolled in 40 pars, tied for the most by any player in the field.Â
- Playing in his final collegiate event as a Blue Devil, John Peters logged his best finish of the season.
