DURHAM, N.C. – Following a strong showing at the ACC Fencing Championships, the Duke men's and women's fencers will transition into the individual portion of the season with the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Fencing Regional Saturday, March 12. Originally scheduled to take place on the campus of Lafayette College, the meet has been moved to Moravian College, approximately 12 miles west of Lafayette College.
A fencer's performance at regionals will have a direct impact on their chance at qualifying for the NCAA Fencing Championships, as both their regular season resume and placing at the regional meet will be considered when the field is selected.
A LOOK BACK AT 2015
- At last year's regional meet hosted by Duke, eight Blue Devils logged top-10 finishes in their respective weapons, led by Christopher Monti taking third in men's saber.
- Jennifer Ling led the women with a fourth-place showing in women's saber, while Isabella Barna took fifth in women's epee.
LAST TIME OUT
- Competing at the ACC Championships, both the Duke men's and women's teams finished second in the team standings with a 2-1 record.
- Individually, Ling became the first Duke women's fencer to win an ACC Championship in program history. Ling was also the first Blue Devil for either the men or women to win an ACC title since Thomas Clark and Ed Pettiss captured gold in 1973 in men's saber and men's epee, respectively.
- Sophomore epeeist Dakota Nollner claimed the silver medal individually to pace the men's squad.
SUPER SABERS
- Leading the way for the Duke women, sophomore sabers Ling and Haley Fisher have each posted 50+ wins this season, pacing all Blue Devil fencers in victories with records of 57-25 and 57-15, respectively.
- All three regular men's sabers have logged at least 40 wins and two have surpassed 50: Pascual Di Tella (57-18), Peter Yang (52-32) and Charles Copti (49-34).
- The five have combined to account for all five of Duke's ACC Fencer of the Week honors this season, with Ling and Copti being the most recent recipients after sweeping the awards Feb. 23.
FOIL-ING THE OPPOSITION
- Women's freshman foilist Kristen Coury has registered a 51-27 record during her rookie season in Durham, leading all Duke foilists and Blue Devil women freshmen. Junior Julia Lee ranks second on the women's foil squad with 41 wins.
- Sophomore Jan Maceczek paces the men's foil squad with 37 wins, followed by junior Ethan Yu with 31.
EXEMPLARY EPEEISTS
- Rookie Bryn Hammarberg heads the men's foil squad and ranks tied for second among all Duke men with 52 wins, the most by any Blue Devil freshman, followed by sophomore Dean Ischiropoulos with 38.
