No. 13: Conner Hartmann Makes History; Secures 3rd All-America Award
Duke 197-pounder Conner Hartmann etched his name in the Duke records book in 2016, becoming the first Blue Devil in wrestling program history to earn three All-America honors. The fifth-seeded Hartmann, facing unseeded Ryan Wolfe of Rider, used a stellar third period to come away with the 7-0 decision and a guaranteed spot on the podium. Scoreless after two periods despite quality shots by both wrestlers, Hartmann was the first on the scoreboard with an escape to start the stanza. Wolfe turned in a couple quality shots, but Hartmann was able to come out the backend for the takedown that made it 3-0. Hartmann quickly turned Wolfe and nearly got the pin as time ran out and resulted in four nearfall points for the 7-0 win. Hartmann finished his career with a win, taking seventh overall. The list of accolades for Hartmann is long. He is the first Duke wrestler to be a three-time All-American, the first to qualify for four consecutive NCAA Championships and leaves Duke ranking fourth all-time in wins with 98. His .765 win percentage is ninth in Duke history and he became just the 13th wrestler in program history to record 30 wins in a season. A two-time ACC Champion, Hartmann finished the year with a 30-3 overall record and will depart as Duke's most decorated wrestler.
