Rowing Opens Fall Campaign at Princeton Chase

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Duke rowing team opened its fall season with a full day at the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie. The Blue Devils raced a trio of varsity 8+ boats, four varsity 4+ crews and one novice 8+ entry. Duke came away with three total top-five finishes and a good measuring stick for the remainder of the fall.

“I think our team was pretty consistent with what we see in practice,” assistant coach Chuck Rodosky said. “We have lots of work to do, but I think we are giant steps ahead of where we were last year at this time. That's the message we will leave Princeton with.”

Duke's top varsity 8+ began the fall with a fifth place showing, finishing in 14:41.829. The Blue Devils' A boat of Meagan Lew, Katherine Maitland, Olivia Mendonca, Isabel Ruby-Hill, Jessica Findlay, Shannon Tierney, Phoebe Donovan, Megan Conroy and Elizabeth Horne finished behind only Brown, Virginia, Yale and Princeton.

The Blue Devils' second varsity 8+ clocked out at 15:21.628 to take 17th overall while the third crew took 27th in 15:40.005.

Placing the highest of any Duke boat for the day was the top varsity 4+ of Lew, Ruby-Hill, Findlay, Horne and Tierney, which took second with a time of 17:04.080. The Blue Devils finished only behind Princeton's boat (16:26.455).

Duke's second varsity 4 also claimed a top-five finish, coming in fifth in 17:18.276. The third 4+ came in 16th with a time of 17:54.165 while the fourth 4+ was close behind in 20th place (18:16.167).

Duke's novice crew placed ninth overall in 17:48.487.

“The Princeton Chase was a great measuring stick for all Duke crews,” assistant coach Chase Graham said. “We met our goals, but we know that we have a lot more speed to find. The novice women got their first taste of our sport, and today's result will help motivate us to find the next level as we prepare for the Rivanna Romp.”

The Blue Devils end the fall season at the Rivanna Romp on November 13 in Charlottesville, Va.
