CARY, N.C. -- The Duke men's cross country team raced to an 11th-place team finish at the ACC Cross Country Championships held at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., Friday morning. Syracuse took the team title with 29 points, followed by Virginia (72) in second and NC State (82) in third.
“I was pleased with Stephen Garrett's place,” head men's cross country coach Norm Ogilvie said. “That's a lifetime best over 8K for him, and a competitive effort. The biggest positive of the day is that the guys got a taste of how tough the ACC really is, and hopefully that will motivate them to continue working hard.”
Duke, which accumulated 311 points in the contest, was paced by sophomore Stephen Garrett, who finished 35th overall with a personal-best eight-kilometer time of 24:15.3. Garrett, who improved on his 50th-place finish from last year's conference championship, served as Duke's top finisher for the first time this season.
Sophomore Nikhil Pulimood and junior Alec Kunzweiler also dipped under the 25-minute mark, covering the distance in times of 24:52.8 and 24:59.0, respectively. Pulimood crossed the finish in 70th overall, while Kunzweiler placed six-positions behind Pulimood in 76th.
Duke's top-five finishers were rounded out by junior Jordan Burton and freshman Cole Hoff. Burton crossed the finish with a time of 25:03.5 to place 78th, followed closely by Hoff, who posted a time of 25:08.1 to finish 82nd. Hoff's time marks a personal best for the Westlake Village, Calif., native.
Senior Brian Benesch and freshman Tom Sullivan each made their ACC Cross Country Championship debuts. Sullivan finished sixth for the Blue Devils and 96th overall with a personal-best time of 25:35.9, while Benesch also registered a personal-best effort of 25:40.7 to finish 98th.
“I'd like to see the team respond to the performance we gave today at ACCs,” Ogilvie said. “We have to take a couple days, regroup on Monday at practice, and we'll see where we are then.”
The Blue Devils resume competition next Saturday, traveling to Cary, N.C., for the Adidas Three Stripe Invitational.
