DURHAM, N.C. – With the indoor track & field season set to begin for the Blue Devils next Friday, the Duke women enter the 2016 campaign ranked 16th in the NCAA Division I Women's Indoor Track & Field National Team Rankings, according to Wednesday's announcement from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Duke earned the second-highest ranking among ACC schools, joining NC State (15th), Miami (17th), Notre Dame (20th), Clemson (22nd) and Boston College (24th). With six schools in the top 25, the ACC trails only the SEC's seven selections. Overall, holding the top spot in the preseason standings is Arkansas, the 2015 indoor team champion, followed by Georgia in second, Texas at No. 3, Kansas State in fourth and Oregon holding the No. 5 spot.
At last year's NCAA Indoor Championships, the Duke women finished tied for 21st with 11 points, paced by Megan Clark scoring eight with her silver-medal showing in the pole vault, tying the ACC record with a clearance of 14-9.00 (4.50m). Contributing the three additional points were Madeline Kopp, Maddy Price, Elizabeth Kerpon and Lauren Hansson, combining for a sixth-place finish in the women's 4x400 with a school-record time of 3:32.56.
The Blue Devils will kick off the 2016 season Friday, Jan. 15 with the Carolina Cup starting at 5 p.m., hosted by North Carolina at the Eddie Smith Field House.
