Duke Head Coach Mike KrzyzewskiOpening Statement:“It was a hard fought game by both teams. It was well played and more so, well competed. NC State is a tough team. [Cat] Barber is such a good player and they use him so well. The thing I'm most proud of is that we didn't get knocked out. In the first half [NC State] put up six straight '3s' and that could have been a fourth round knockout but our kids stayed the course, got back up to within three but were down by seven at the half. At the start of the second half we played some lights-out offensive basketball and some really good defense. It's a huge win for us. We're marginalized in depth and some experience but not in heart, effort and togetherness. “
On this being a “game of two halves”:“I don't agree with you. I thought both teams played well in both halves. I thought we played well in the first half, they just knocked the stuffing out of it. We didn't play bad defense on those '3s', they just knocked them down and we did that in the second half. When that ball is going in you look like you're playing a lot better than the other team but you're just shooting better. It was a competitive game. We didn't yell or scream during halftime we just told the team to stay the course, we're doing okay, not to let them score inside and to keep rebounding with them. We were able to rebound with them, thank goodness.”
On the reason behind Duke's defensive choices:“Barber. He's one of the best players in the country. The kid's really good. We didn't want him to come down and use his energy right there in half court because you can't guard him one-on-one, he's just too good. The thing about Barber is that he's shooting so well. He's shooting his jump shot like crazy so you have to plan where he's not shooting then hopefully make it hard for him to get the ball. That opened some things up but it worked enough and we played on the offensive end very well.”
On defending Cat Barber better in the second half:“I think he got hurt a little bit too. I hope he's not hurt but you could see something happened. That type of thing happens to us too and they're marginalized with that as well. They can't afford to not have him on the court - he's one of the best players in the country. We just told our guys to deny it back to him and try not to let him go on you. He's so dangerous, he's really damn good.”
NC State Head Coach Mark GottfriedOpening Statement:“The first thing I want to say is that Duke played extremely well in the second half. They shot the ball really well and they gave us all kinds of trouble. I've got to give those guys a lot of credit for how they shot the ball and played really well. I also want to say thank you to the Wolfpack Nation. Wow. I am so proud of our fans, I'm so proud of the way they came out today. With the weather, and the governor making a statement, our fans came. I'm just so proud of our fans. I'm very thankful to the Wolfpack Nation, it was great. I thought some things changed in the second half. Cat kind of got kneed in the knee, so hopefully he is okay. From that point forward in the game we were different team. I don't think he scored after that. He had 16 at the half, he hit a '3' there to start the second half and he took maybe one or two shots after that. That hurt us a lot. Obviously, we need everybody at full strength. We had a hard time guarding them off the dribble in the second half. Their dribble penetration and their three point shooting were probably the difference. I'm extremely proud of our guys, they don't need to be ashamed one bit. We played very, very well early and had to overcome some things in the second half, but we didn't get it done. We're going to continue to work, and get better and go from here.”
On improvement from first game to second game:“I never want to take anything away from what they did, but we scored 78 points without Cat getting a basket in the last 15 minutes of the game. We shoot 52 percent from the field, with Cat Barber at 100 percent we probably would have attacked even better, probably similar to the first half. That was a blow to us, there's no doubt about it. He said he could play on it, and he tried, so we've got to give him great credit for trying. That was a game changer for us. I certainly don't want to take anything away from what they did. I thought we adjusted and attacked it pretty well.”
On Brandon Ingram:“
Brandon Ingram and
Grayson Allen, we recruited both of them, and they were just terrific today. I've got to give those two guys credit. I think they're both going to have great futures. We've played against Ben Simmons this year from LSU, and we've played against
Brandon Ingram, and I wouldn't be surprised to see his name called first this year. He's that good. And he was good today, especially in the second half.”
