DURHAM, N.C.--Duke University men's soccer standout
Zach Mathers became the 17th Blue Devil all time to be selected in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft today as the No. 35 pick by the Seattle Sounders. Mathers, the 15th pick of the second round, joins former Blue Devil Garth Lagerwey who is the general manger and president of the Sounders.
Recapping Chachi's Career
The Keller, Texas native played all over the field for the Blue Devils during his career. Mathers is a three-time All-ACC pick, including first team honors in 2015, as well as earning All-ACC Freshman Team honors as a rookie. He anchored the defense in the early portion of his career before moving into an attacking role this past season, during which he led the team with eight goals and eight assists for 24 points. He finished his career having started 69 of his 71 games played and tallying 14 goals and 18 assists for 46 points.
Duke All-Time in the MLS SuperDraft
Mathers is the 17th Blue Devil to have been selected in the MLS SuperDraft since the inaugural draft in 1996. Five of the 17 were picked in the first round with Hermann Award winner Andrew Wenger being the No. 1 overall choice in the 2012 draft. Both Jay Heaps and Ali Curtis landed in the No. 2 spot and went on to successful MLS careers and currently are still parts of MLS as a head coach and as a sporting directory, respectively.

Seattle Sounders
The Seattle Sounders joined the MLS in 2009 as an expansion team and is home to one of the most loyal fan bases in Major League Soccer. The Sounders, led by head coach Sigi Schmid, finished fourth in the Western Conference standings last season and lost to FC Dallas in the playoffs. They were the Supporters' Shield winner in 2014. The first game is set for Feb. 3 at Vancouver.
