DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University sophomore defender Markus Fjørtoft garnered the season's first Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student Athlete of the Week after his stellar performance for the men's soccer team in the John Rennie Nike Invitational this past weekend.
Fjørtoft anchored the Duke defense to a pair of victories over Saint Mary's and DePaul to earn All-Tournament team honors. In the season opener against Saint Mary's, the Asker, Norway native scored the Blue Devils' first goal of the 2015 season to give Duke a 1-0 lead en route to the 3-2 victory. He played the full 90 minutes against the Gaels, holding them to just 10 shots overall and five on goal.
Two days later Fjøtfot helped limit DePaul to just eight shots for the game and three on goal in his 90 minutes of action. He is one of two field players for the Blue Devils who played the full 180 minutes as Duke got off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2009.
The Blue Devils are back in action Saturday night against Iona. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., at Koskinen Stadium.
