Blue Devils Take Straight Set Victory over Seahawks

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke volleyball team swept its fifth opponent of the season, downing UNC Wilmington 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-13) Saturday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Middle blocker Leah Meyer amassed a career-best 17 kills to pace a Duke offense that totaled 52 kills to the Seahawks' 21. She made just two errors on 31 attempts, good for a .484 hitting percentage, while leading all players with six blocks.
Defensively, Duke (5-3) stymied UNC Wilmington (6-2) for much of the match. The Blue Devils picked up 70 digs and held the Seahawks to a .055 hitting percentage. Libero Sasha Karelov led the way with 19 digs, defensive specialist Kelli Kalinoski added 13 and outside hitter Emily Sklar contributed 10.
Sklar also put down 11 kills to notch her second consecutive and 34th career double-double.
Meyer knocked down nine of Duke's 18 kills in a 25-20 opening set. The freshman did not commit an attack error on 14 swings, hitting .643 for the frame. UNCW started the set with three straight points, but Duke found its rhythm and won six consecutive points behind three Meyer kills. The Blue Devils maintained a comfortable lead throughout much of the frame before the Seahawks trimmed the margin to four points at 21-17. Duke ended the threat with a Tucker kill and Meyer's ninth tally wrapped up the set six points later.
Duke's defense dominated the second frame, holding UNCW to a -.125 hitting percentage. The Seahawks could muster just two kills in the 25-12 Duke decision while committing six attack errors. Alyse Whitaker sent down six kills to pace Duke offensively, while Karelov and Kalinoski teamed up for 13 digs.
The third set belonged to the Blue Devils and Duke captured the frame, 25-13. Duke won six of the first seven points to establish control and never let UNCW back into the set.
Next up, the Blue Devils play host to Michigan Friday, Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
