DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to announce that right-handed pitcher and recent Cornell graduate Brian McAfee will join the Blue Devils' 2016 roster. A starting pitcher and team captain for the Big Red, McAfee has one year of remaining eligibility and is enrolled in The Fuqua School of Business' Master of Management Studies program.
“Brian McAfee is a tremendous competitor who really locates the fastball well and pitches to our philosophy in terms of pitching to the bottom part of the strike zone and producing soft contact,” said Pollard. “He has the opportunity to come in and make an immediate impact.”
In three seasons with the Big Red, McAfee was a fixture in the Cornell rotation. He went 14-5 with a 2.66 career ERA over 183.0 career innings for the Big Red. This past season, McAfee garnered first team All-Ivy, CoSIDA Academic All-District and Academic All-Ivy honors while registering a 5-2 record and 1.77 ERA.
“Brian has been without question one of the top pitchers in the Ivy League since he arrived at Cornell four years ago,” added Pollard. “He once again posted some of the top numbers of any pitchers in the Ivy League. In addition, he pitched seven shutout innings against Virginia earlier this year.”
McAfee missed the majority of the 2014 season due to a back injury. He earned second team All-Ivy honors as a freshman, the only rookie in the league to do so that season.
