CORAL GABLES, Fla. – No. 12 Miami's Enrique Sosa, Daniel Briggi and Ryan Otero combined on a three-hit shutout and the Hurricanes defeated Duke, 10-0, in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Mark Light Field at Alex Rodriguez Park.
Starter Sosa (4-3) pitched 6.1 scoreless innings in the win. He allowed the one hit, a Peter Zyla leadoff single in the fifth, and walked just one while striking out three. Briggi took the mound in the seventh and did not allow a baserunner the rest of the way.
I thought Sosa was really good for Miami,” said head coach Chris Pollard. “They're a really good club. I certainly see them as being one of the top 10 or 12 teams in the country. [I was] very impressed with their club offensively and they cover a lot of ground in the outfield.”
Miami (24-9, 11-4 ACC) totaled 13 hits, led by Garrett Kennedy's three-hit performance. Following a five-run third, the Hurricanes added a lone run in the fourth and four more in the sixth bolstered by David Thompson's ninth homer of the year.
Stretched thin following a series of injuries, the Duke (19-12, 4-11 ACC) pitching staff surrendered a season-high 10 runs. The Hurricane trio of Kennedy, Thompson and George Iskenderian did the bulk of the damage, combining for eight hits, six runs and eight RBI.
Miami registered six singles in a five-run bottom of the third, ignited by a Johnny Ruiz leadoff base hit. A Justin Smith walk and Ricky Eusebio bunt single loaded the bases before Kennedy got the scoring started with an RBI single through the right side. Iskenderian added a two-run base knock before a dropped throw on a double steal attempt allowed the inning to continue. Thompson and Willie Abreu drove in a run each prior to freshman Luke Whitten entering the game and inducing a fielder's choice for the final out.
Kennedy tripled in the fourth and scored the Hurricanes' sixth run on an Iskenderian base hit.
With two out in the sixth, Thompson sent a three-run home run over the left field wall to extend the margin to 9-0. Ruiz contributed his second single of the game to plate Abreu, who had walked two batters earlier.
Sophomore Bailey Clark (2-2) suffered the loss. He allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits over two innings.
Redshirt freshman James Ziemba, freshman Chris McGrath and freshman Ryan Day were effective out of the bullpen. The first-year players combined for three scoreless innings.
Day and fellow freshman Daniel Calabretta each registered their first career hits with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
“I'm really pleased with the performances of James Ziemba, Chris McGrath and Ryan Day on the mound and I also really liked the way Johnathan Lloyd, Daniel Calabrett and Ryan Day came in ready to hit in the ninth inning,” Pollard added.
Duke returns to action Tuesday, April 7, taking on Davidson at 6 p.m., at Jack Coombs Field.
