DURHAM, N.C. – Hosting its first meet since 2013 and the first at the newly constructed Morris Williams Track & Field Stadium, the Duke track and field program kicked off the Duke Invitational Friday afternoon with the men's and women's hammer throw events.
Junior Michael Foley provided the highlight of the meet by breaking his own school record in the men's hammer throw. On his fourth attempt, Foley launched the implement 190-0 (57.92m), besting the previous school standard of 189-4 (57.72m) to place fourth in the event.
In the women's competition, Blue Devil senior Stephanie Skove took home fifth place. The Eatontown, N.J., native finished with a best mark of 161-4 (49.18m), which she registered on her second attempt of the event.
After one event apiece, the Duke men sit fourth in the team rankings with four points, and the women are fifth with two. North Carolina and Liberty lead the men's competition with 10 points each, while North Carolina holds the top spot for the women with 10 points.
The Blue Devils will return to Morris Williams Track & Field Stadium tomorrow for the completion of the Duke Invitational. Following a ceremony dedicating the track at 10:30 a.m., the meet will continue with field events starting at noon and running events at 4 p.m. A live video stream will be available here from 4:00-8:30 p.m. to those with a Blue Devil Network Plus subscription.
