DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to announce the signing of 6-4 infielder/right-handed pitcher Matt Mervis to a National Letter of Intent. Mervis is currently a senior at Georgetown Preparatory School in North Bethesda, Md., and is set to join the Blue Devils in the fall of 2016.
A left-hand hitting third baseman, Mervis has a solid frame, moves well side to side and boasts a strong arm. With quick hands and a strong lower half, Mervis has the potential to generate power at the plate. On the mound, his fastball reaches the low 90s with heavy sink while he also features a swing-and-miss breaking ball.
“Matt Mervis is one of the top two-way talents in the country,” said Pollard. “He has a left-handed bat with a lot of power. He produced some of the highest exit velocities at an event in Jupiter, Fla., at 108 miles per hour. Matt's also been up to 92 mph on the mound. Along with his competitiveness, he is a really unique combination of a guy that we think can help us both at the plate and on the mound.”
According to Perfect Game, Mervis is the No. 223 overall recruit nationally in the Class of 2016 and the No. 18 third baseman. The organization also rates him the top prospect at any position in the state of Maryland.
Mervis guided Georgetown Prep, also the high school alma mater of former Blue Devil Michael Matuella, to the 2015 Interstate Athletic Conference championship. He posted a .409 batting average with 39 RBI to go along with a 0.10 ERA.
Along with fellow future Blue Devils Adam Laskey, Will Benson and Graeme Stinson, Mervis was invited to the East Coast Pro Showcase, which provides a venue for the premier youth baseball players across the Eastern United States to compete in a professional environment. He was also invited to the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars, which is comprised of 108 of the nation's top players that are international age-eligible for 18U National Team consideration.
