DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University senior Zach Mathers headlined the Blue Devils' two selections with All-ACC Men's Soccer first team honors as voted upon by the league's 12 head coaches. Sophomore Jeremy Ebobisse was selected to the third team.
The first team recognition is the first for Mathers, while Ebobisse collects his first career ACC award. Clemson and Wake Forest lead all league programs with six All-ACC selections. North Carolina had five players recognized, followed by Virginia with four honorees.
Mather's, Duke's utility man throughout his career, garners his third All-ACC award after being voted to the third team the past two seasons. Moving into an attacking midfield role after playing defense for much of his career, Mathers led the Blue Devils in scoring with eight goals and eight assists for 24 points.
He tallied three goals and an assist for the Blue Devils in the 6-2 win over NC State to garner ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors. The hat trick was the first by a Blue Devil since Andrew Wenger had three in the 5-2 victory over, oddly enough, the Wolfpack in 2011. The senior captain finished with seven points on the night, assisting on the Blue Devils' fourth goal, to match Wenger's output against the Wolfpack four years ago.
For his career, Mathers has started 69 of his 71 games played and tallied 14 goals and 18 assists for 46 points.
Duke's top threat in the striker position, Ebobisse had a strong sophomore campaign with seven goals and four assists for 18 points. He tallied the Blue Devils' tying goal in a 2-2 draw with fifth-ranked Virginia to garner his first career ACC weekly award. The Maryland native got off to a fast start to the year, scoring four goals in the first five games. He resumed his scoring ways late in the season with two goals in his final four contests. Ebobisse's 18 points in 2015 are 11 more than he scored as a freshman.
The Blue Devils are 10-7-2 overall and recently lost a hard-fought 2-1 battle to Louisville in the ACC Championship First Round. NCAA Championship selections will be announced Nov. 16 at 1 p.m., on NCAA.com.
