DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men's soccer team kicks off ACC postseason play Wednesday as the No. 8 overall seed in the upcoming ACC Championship. The Blue Devils, finishing 3-4-1 in ACC play for 10 points, will host No. 9 seed Louisville Nov. 4 at 7 p.m.
Duke finished in a tie with Syracuse with 10 points, but the Orange won the head-to-head tiebreak to capture the seventh seed. The Blue Devils are 19-23-4 all-time in ACC Tournament play, own three titles and are the eighth seed for the first time in program history.
Ticket prices for Wednesday's game are $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Students from ACC institutions gain free admission with a valid university ID. Children five-and-under are free. Ticket booths will open at 6 p.m., or you can purchase them online at GoDuke.com. The game will be broadcast on Blue Devil Network+ live with Chris Edwards calling the action.
The winner advances to the quarterfinal round to take on top-seeded Wake Forest, Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.
Riding a five-game win streak, Duke welcomes a Louisville squad that has lost three straight. The Cardinals are coming off of a 4-2 setback to No. 2 Wake Forest. They have faced perennial powers Indiana, North Carolina and the Demon Deacons in their previous three outings.
Duke is 1-2-1 all-time against the Cardinals and 0-1 since Louisville joined the ACC. The two teams did not meet in the regular season this year. Louisville defeated the Blue Devils 5-0 in 2014.
The Blue Devils are led on offense by senior Zach Mathers with seven goals and eight assists for a career-best 22 points. His point total this season matches his three previous years combined. Sophomore Jeremy Ebobisse is right on his heels with seven goals and four assists for 18 points, while Brian White has six goals and 13 points overall. Duke, with 104 points on the year, is one of the top 10 scoring teams in the nation.
In the defensive third of the field, Duke has regrouped from a tough stretch in the middle of the season. The Blue Devils have allowed just four goals in the previous five games after giving up 14 in the six-game winless stretch. In goal, Mitchell Kupstas has come on strong since earning his first start against Hofstra. The veteran keeper is 5-2-0 overall and sports a 1.25 goals against average and a .607 save percentage.
Louisville is 6-8-3 overall and finished 1-4-3 in ACC action with a win over Boston College. The Cardinals are led on offense by Tate Schmitt with six goals and four assists for 16 points. Tim Kubel and Daniel Johnson are in the double-digit category with 11 and 10, respectively.
Defensively, Louisville has allowed 27 goals in 17 games for 1.51 goals against average. A trio of goalkeepers has split time with Casey Axman earning the most recent starting assignments. The Cardinals are 0-5-1 on the road this season and have given up 13 goals in those six contests.
