DURHAM, N.C. – Duke battled to five sets for the third straight match, coming up just short against Miami 3-2 (25-22, 26-28, 19-25, 25-19, 15-12) Sunday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke (7-9, 2-4 ACC) led 2-1 before Miami (11-5, 4-2 ACC) rebounded to grab the victory. The Hurricanes totaled nine more kills (67-58) and committed six fewer attack errors (29-35) than the Blue Devils. Duke held Miami to a .199 hitting percentage. However, the Blue Devils posted a .111 hitting percentage, the team's lowest mark this season.
“We just were not as successful offensively today as we need to be in win a match like this,” said head coach Jolene Nagel.
Middle blocker Jordan Tucker capped a standout weekend with her second-straight match with 20 or more kills. After totaling a career-best 24 Friday versus No. 18 Florida State, Tucker tallied 20 to lead all players. The Prairie Village, Kan., native also chipped in five blocks.
“Jordan's been working really hard out there,” Nagel said. “It's really exciting to see her get that many kills and blocks. The past couple matches she's lifted it up a notch and playing with more intensity. She's really working hard out there to get open as a middle hitter and as a middle blocker.”
Outside hitter Emily Sklar turned in her second consecutive double-double, contributing 13 kills and 18 digs. Setter Maggie Deichmeister dished out 54 assists to go along with six blocks, six digs and a pair of aces in a well-rounded effort.
Olga Strantzali amassed 18 kills to pace the Hurricanes. Alexis Mourning and Taylor Scott added 15 each to aid the Miami cause.
Duke nearly shook off a sluggish start in the first, but Miami held on down the stretch for a 25-22 decision. The Hurricanes captured seven of the match's initial eight points – three on Duke miscues – before the Blue Devils narrowed the margin late. Duke got within a point at 23-22, but Miami closed it out with a Strantzali kill followed by a block.
Miami stumbled early in the second set, enabling Duke to start with a 5-1 advantage. The margin held until a 6-1 Hurricane stretch knotted the frame at 18 points apiece. The two teams traded points, resulting in seven ties over the latter portion of the stanza. After Miami again tied the score at 26-26, Duke utilized a Hurricane attack error and a Sklar kill to seal the set, 28-26.
Duke came away with the victory in a back-and-forth third set that saw 10 ties and six lead changes. The Blue Devils trailed by as many as two points, 17-15, but took control with a 8-1 spurt. Tucker put down a kill to establish set point before Deichmeister and Anna Kropf teamed up for the block to secure the win, 25-19.
Miami established a three-point lead at 19-16 in the fourth and did not allow Duke to regain momentum, ultimately winning the stanza 25-19 to tie the match at 2-2 overall. Mourning had five kills in the set for the Hurricanes.
Miami hit .402 and held Duke to a .071 clip in the decisive fifth frame, capturing a 15-12 decision. Mourning and Kolby Bird had four kills each. Bird registered Miami's final three kills to clinch the Hurricane's victory.
Duke hits the road this coming week for matches at Notre Dame (Oct. 16) and Louisville (Oct. 18).
