BOSTON – Junior forward Heather Morris tipped in a pass from senior Amanda Kim 13 minutes into overtime to lift the fourth-ranked Blue Devils to a 1-0 decision over No. 17 Boston University Sunday at the Terriers' New Balance Field. Morris collected her second game-winning goal of the season and Duke recorded its sixth consecutive win to improve to 10-3 on the year.
After registering just two shots in the opening period, the Blue Devils drew a penalty corner early in the second half but saw a shot from Morris get turned away by Boston University goalkeeper Cammy Jensen. Following several more corners for both teams, Duke created an opportunity inside the circle in the 57th minute. The squad had three looks at the cage, with one shot going wide and another getting blocked by a defender before a final offering from junior Hunter Bracale was saved by Jensen.
Neither side was able to score in the last 13 minutes, sending the contest into overtime.
The Blue Devils were active on the offensive end in overtime, earning a corner that set up an Aileen Johnson shot seven minutes in. However, Jensen of the Terriers was there to make her third save of the afternoon.
Both teams continued to push forward until Kim found Morris, who tipped it over Jensen from 10 yards out to seal the victory at the 83:28 mark.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Lauren Blazing made two of her three saves on the day in the first half. The Terriers tallied four shots to the two by Duke in the opening 35 minutes, though the Blue Devils finished with a 12-8 advantage in the category overall. The visiting team also led in penalty corners, 4-2.
Duke moved to 2-1 on the fall in overtime contests after previously falling to No. 6 Stanford (Aug. 30) and defeating No. 3 Maryland (Sept. 6). The defensive unit also notched its third shutout of the season.
The Blue Devils continue their road swing next weekend, making the short trip to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face North Carolina Friday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. Duke then heads to James Madison Sunday, Oct. 18 for a 1 p.m. matchup.
