DURHAM, N.C. – Three current and three former Blue Devils earned spots on Track and Field News' 68th annual U.S. Rankings, along with three Duke relay teams. Track and Field News, the premier publication for the sport, includes in its rankings athletes from the high school, college and professional levels.
On the women's side, Shannon Rowbury leads the way, earning three No. 2 rankings. Graduating from Duke in 2006, the distance specialist is the second-rated American runner in the 1,500 (3:59.49), 3,000 (8:29.93) and 5,000 (14:48.68). In addition, Rowbury ranks tied for 27th in the 800 with a time of 2:02.58.
Also earning a top-10 ranking is former Blue Devil Juliet Bottorff, sitting in seventh in the 10,000 with a time of 32:25.69, which she ran as a graduate student last spring at the ACC Outdoor Championships to set a meet record and take home the conference crown.
Joining Rowbury and Bottorff are two current Blue Devils, junior Megan Clark and sophomore Christine Streisel. Clark ranks 11th in the pole vault with her school-record clearance of 14-7.25 (4.45). Streisel, a javelin specialist, earned the 36th spot with a toss of 164-6 (50.15), the second-farthest javelin throw in Duke history.
Rounding out the U.S. rankings on the women's side are three relay teams: the distance medley relay (11th), the sprint medley relay (14th) and the 4x400 (21st). Anima Banks, Elizabeth Kerpon, Haley Meier and Audrey Huth made up the DMR squad that ran a season-best 11:06.87 in 2014. Three of the four return for the 2015 campaign, with Huth the only one graduated. In the SMR, the team of Teddi Maslowski, Lauren Hansson, Madeline Kopp and Abby Farley, running a 3:50.41 last spring, will have all four back on the track for Duke this year. The 4x400 group of Hansson, Maslowski, Kopp and Elizabeth Kerpon returns full-strength this season after placing 17th at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships and setting a school record with a time of 3:33.09 in the NCAA Preliminary Round. It was also the first time in school history that Duke sent a women's 4x400 team to the NCAA outdoor meet.
For the men, former Blue Devil high jumper Tanner Anderson ranks 28th with a height of 7-3 (2.21). Redshirt junior Thomas Lang rounds out the rankings for Duke, earning the 36th spot in the javelin. His mark of 229-1 (69.83) helped him secure gold at the ACC Outdoor Championships and ranks second on Duke's all-time list.
Hailing from Canada, Kate Van Buskirk earned two spots in the world rankings, highlighted by a No. 10 ranking in the mile with a time of 4:28.08. The 2010 Duke graduate also ranks 37th in the 1,500, running a 4:05.38.
The Blue Devils kick off the 2015 indoor season Friday, Jan. 16 at the Carolina Cup in Chapel Hill, N.C.
