DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke baseball team held its first official practice of the spring Friday at Jack Coombs Field as the Blue Devils prepare for their third season under the direction of head coach Chris Pollard.
Duke enjoyed its first 30-win campaign since 2009 this past season, compiling a 33-25 overall record. The Blue Devils finished fourth in the ACC with a 16-14 conference mark. Duke's 16 league wins tied the program record and the Blue Devils swept four ACC series in the same season for the first time since 1994.
A veteran team in 2014, this year's roster features several new faces with the addition of 13 freshmen. Duke will be without pitchers Trent Swart and James Marvel but veterans Andrew Istler and Michael Matuella return to provide the foundation for Duke's starting rotation.
That pair is just two of the Blue Devils' 14 returning pitchers. The Blue Devils also bring back sophomore Karl Blum, sophomore Bailey Clark, redshirt senior Dillon Haviland, junior Nick Hendrix, redshirt junior Remy Janco, sophomore Kevin Lewallyn, senior Sarkis Ohanian, redshirt junior Conner Stevens and redshirt freshman James Ziemba.
Along with freshmen additions Chris Koppenhaver, Chris McGrath, Mitch Stallings and Luke Whitten, the Blue Devils are excited about their depth on the mound.
Positionally, Duke's lineup will contain several newcomers as six of the Blue Devils' nine infielders and three of the five outfielders are freshmen. Junior shortstop Kenny Koplove, senior second baseman Andy Perez and redshirt senior catcher Mike Rosenfeld are all back to provide experience up the middle.
Behind the plate, Duke also returns catchers Reed Anthes and Cris Perez. Senior outfielder Grant McCabe, redshirt junior outfielder Cameron Neal and junior infielder/outfielder Jalen Phillips are among the Blue Devil veterans.
Duke's corps of rookie position players include infielders Justin Bellinger, Daniel Calabretta, Ryan Day, Jack Labosky, Max Miller and Peter Zyla as well as outfielders Evan Dougherty, James McGhee and Michael Smiciklas.
The Blue Devils open the season in three weeks, traveling to Berkeley, Calif., for a three-game series Feb. 13-15 against California.
