DURHAM, N.C. -- North Carolina junior quarterback Marquise Williams amassed 374 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns to lead the Tar Heels to a 45-20 victory over No. 25 Duke in front of 33,941 fans at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Sophomore
Johnell Barnes led Duke (8-3, 4-3 ACC) with six catches for 85 yards. Senior wideout
Jamison Crowder added six catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. He moves up to fourth in ACC history in career yards with 3,437, while his 268 career catches are 16 shy of passing Duke's
Conner Vernon for the ACC record. Quarterback
Anthony Boone finished the night 22-of-40 for 262 yards and passed for a pair of touchdowns. Boone also led the Blue Devils on the ground with 36 yards.
DeVon Edwards anchored Duke's defensive effort with a career-high 15 tackles, including nine for loss, and a forced fumble.
David Helton added a game-high 17 stops.
North Carolina (6-5, 4-3) capitalized on a pair of Duke turnovers early in the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead after 7:10. The Tar Heels recovered a fumble on their own 20-yard line and got on the board 12 plays later when Williams found receiver Quinshad Davis in the right corner of the end zone.
Two plays later, with Duke pinned inside its own 15-yard line, North Carolina knocked the ball loose again. This time Tim Scott picked up the football and ran 10 yards untouched into the end zone for the two-touchdown lead with 7:49 left in the opening stanza.
Duke answered 3:27 later with a 10-yard strike from Boone to Isaac Blakeney to cut the lead in half. The 10-play drive was highlighted by a 31-yard grab by Crowder over the shoulder of a North Carolina safety to put the Blue Devils in the red zone. Boone accounted for 62 of the 75 yards on the drive, running for 21 and throwing for 41.
The Tar Heels tacked on one more touchdown to take a 21-7 lead after the first quarter and added their fourth score of the day just 1:58 into the second quarter for a commanding 28-7 lead.
With the Blue Devils' offense unable to move the ball on North Carolina, Duke's defense was outstanding in keeping the Tar Heels from extending the lead any further. The Blue Devils forced North Carolina into three turnovers in its red zone in the second quarter to go into halftime trailing just 28-7.
North Carolina outgained Duke 391-156 in the first half, including 203-67 on the ground.
Duke ended its scoring drought late in the third quarter when Boone found Crowder on an 18-yard toss. The touchdown was Boone's second of the game and Crowder's 22nd of his career. The Blue Devils got one more score on a 1-yard plunge from
Thomas Sirk, but the North Carolina offense was too much for Duke to handle as it tacked on one more touchdown for the 45-20 victory.
Duke finishes its regular season Nov. 29 when it hosts Coastal Division foe Wake Forest.
