DURHAM, N.C. – Director of Track & Field Norm Ogilvie announced Thursday that javelin thrower Nick Solfanelli has signed a National Letter of Intent to Duke and will join the Blue Devils next fall.
Solfanelli, currently a senior at Scranton Prep in Scranton, Pa., was one of five javelin specialists to be selected to the 2014 Track & Field News High School Boys All-America Team after a successful junior season, highlighted by a state-best and school-record toss of 207-7 (63.27).
“We are very excited to welcome Nick to our program,” assistant coach and throwing specialist B.J. Linnenbrink said. “His commitment allows us to continue our long standing tradition of excellence in the javelin.”
Solfanelli spent most of this past summer training and competing in national meets. He took second at the New Balance National Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Greensboro, N.C., with a mark of 214-5 (65.35), then followed that by setting a personal-best and earning another silver medal with a throw of 215-8 (65.74) at the Chicagoland Throwers Series at Benedictine University in Illinois.
Solfanelli is the first male athlete to officially join the 2015-16 Duke track & field recruiting class.
