Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallieOpening Statement:“We just got better tonight. Urgency on defense was much better. Obviously there were things we were trying to accomplish. The team had set a goal and reached that goal, defensively, and that's important. There's no question it was playing against a different level, but the reality is you've got to perform against that level to perform against all levels in terms of your team's goals and your urgency. I thought (sophomore forward) Oderah (Chidom) was fantastic. She's that kind of rebounder and scorer. She moves and is very, very active, so it was great to see her doing those things. Obviously she had some height, but she was still active and very productive there. And then you just have to watch out for (redshirt freshman guard) Becca (Greenwell). She's just always lurking somewhere. I think she really keeps the defense honest and has worked on her defense, too.”
On in-game adjustments made to get the ball in the post to open up outside shots:“I think the team just settled in. There wasn't necessarily any offensive adjustment. You're always going to get those shots on the perimeter; the key is how you get them. They come through everybody working the basketball (around). It gives you better rebounding position when that occurs.”
On the production of the underclassmen:“With them and what's coming in next year, that makes me feel really good. The young players, the ones that are getting all the minutes now and can be the leaders of the future, that's a good thing.”
Rebecca GreenwellOn how she felt after playing in her first exhibition game:“It's a great feeling. I've definitely waited for this moment for a long time, so I was just excited to get out there. I think the first half I was nervous a little bit and took some dumb shots, but once I got into the flow of things and we started executing, I started to take the right shots and make the right passes.”
Oderah ChidomOn her improved ball-handling from last season:“Because of the situation with our team, we have a lot of taller players, so it forced some people to move out. Over the summer, I focused on being more comfortable outside on the wing. I attribute my success to that and all the hard work I've been doing with all my teammates.”
Limestone Head Coach Corey FoxOpening Statement:“I just want to say how excited we were to come up here and have a great opportunity to play Duke in Cameron Indoor. I'm very thankful that [Coach P] allowed us to come and play. Our kids had spurts where we really competed and battled. Playing against the high-level team that they are, we did some crazy stuff that we're not supposed to do, but that's what teams at that level do to you. I thought our kids competed, battled. Obviously we didn't make a shot and they had a great size advantage inside and they got it felt like every single rebound in the game. Turnovers were a big part because they mostly turned into layups. Our kids, what a great experience. Thank you Coach for having us to play. What a great experience our kids will have for the rest of their lives. We can definitely learn from this and get better, and that's very important to us.”
On adjustments made during the first half:“We're used to being able to make plays at the rim against most teams. When we got to the rim [tonight], you're looking at a 6-5, 6-4 kid. We were able to drive and kick and get some good looks from the perimeter. We made a couple there a few possessions and made a little spurt. We were able to do that. But their size was so great inside and we couldn't really get to the rim, weren't able to finish. We thought we had some opportunities to get some more drive and kicks, and their length bothered us a lot, especially in the first 10 minutes when they were getting a lot of deflections off our dribblers, off our passes. We thought we had a few more opportunities for some drive and kicks. But that's definitely what we're looking for – getting the ball in the lane, finish at the rim or find a teammate open on the perimeter. They did a really good job of taking that away, especially changing defenses – man, zone – and throwing a lot of things at our ball club. We had a lot of things going against us already just being here, playing them, so they did a great job of adjusting their defenses a lot and pressing a lot. They did a good job of changing a lot of stuff.”
