CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Duke rowing team's Championship Four opened the 2014-15 season with a top-15 finish Sunday at The 50th Head of the Charles Regatta in the Women's Championship Fours race by placing 13th.
The Blue Devils' crew of coxswain Samantha Bowman, stroke seat Elizabeth Horne, Caroline Williams, Phoebe Donovan and Tara Dalton placed 13th out of the deep and talented 17-boat field, covering the 4,800m course in 19:34.36.
"The Champ 4 had a hard time with the windy conditions so they didn't get into a good rhythm today," head coach Robyn Horner said. "To race and compete at this level, you have to execute and I think we could have done a better job at that today."
A pair of US Rowing teams placed first and second in the race with times of 14:43.03 and 15:07.92 while the Syracuse unit was the first collegiate group to finish, in 15:31.71.
"We'll regroup from here for our two home races and get ready for our fall season ending race in Charlottesville," Horner added.
Duke returns to action on Nov. 1 with its first of two home events this fall. The Blue Devils have their second home event on Nov. 8 before ending the fall season at the Rivanna Romp on Nov. 16 in Charlottesville, Va.
