DURHAM, N.C. - Duke volleyball senior Christiana Gray joined juniors Chelsea Cook and Ali McCurdy as well as sophomore Jeme Obeime on the 2012 All-ACC Academic Team as announced by the conference Wednesday, Feb. 28.
Duke's four selections tied with Georgia Tech, Maryland and Miami for the league lead on the 32-member team. The Blue Devils have now placed at least four players on the team every year since the award's inception in 2006.
A three-time All-ACC performer and two-time All-America selection, 6-5 middle blocker Gray picked up her fourth All-ACC Academic Team honor in 2012 to become just the third Blue Devil to earn the distinction in each of their four seasons in Durham. The Carmel, Ind., native wrapped up a stellar career at Duke, finishing with 1,112 kills to rank 18th in the Blue Devil record books. In addition, her .350 career hitting percentage is good for third at Duke and eight all-time in the ACC.
Cook, a 6-2 middle blocker from Overland Park, Kan., received her first All-ACC Academic Team commendation after turning in a career year this past season. Cook ranked fifth on the team with a career-best 247 kills and led the Blue Devils with 140 blocks. She averaged 1.09 blocks per set for the year, a mark which ranked sixth in the ACC.
The two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year, McCurdy is making her third appearance on the conference academic squad. A libero from Tampa, Fla., led the league and broke her own Duke single season record with 672 digs in 2012. With 1,945 career digs, McCurdy ranks second in the Duke career record book and needs 255 digs to break the school career record (2,200 held by Jenny Shull).
Obeime, a 5-11 outside hitter from Carmel, Ind., earned her first career All-ACC Academic Team distinction. She led Duke with 320 kills during her sophomore campaign, bringing her career total to 558 kills after two season in Durham.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for both the previous semester and maintain a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
