DURHAM, N.C. - Elise Walch put down 12 kills and hit .611 and was one of three Florida State attackers with double-digit kills as the 22nd-ranked Seminoles downed Duke 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-19) on Friday night in Tully Gym.
Walch finished 12-for-18 and had only one attack error to lead a Florida State offense that posted a .318 hitting percentage and nine blocks. Middle blocker Ashley Neff spearheaded the defense with seven blocks as the Seminoles (10-4) improved to 5-0 on their home court and 4-0 in the ACC.
Duke middle blocker Christiana Gray stayed hot, connecting on over half of her attacks for nine kills and a .533 hitting percentage. The reigning ACC Player of the Week, Gray has hit .438 or better in four straight matches and improved her season hitting percentage to a team-leading .330 with her recent tear.
Outside of Gray, however, Duke (8-5, 2-2 ACC) had only one player - setter Kellie Catanach - hit over .300 for the match. The Florida State block was too much for the Blue Devils, who hit under .200 for the first time since Sept. 8 against No. 19 San Diego.
"We didn't control the ball well enough tonight to be able to sustain any momentum," head coach Jolene Nagel said. "Florida State di a great job of blocking at the net, and I thin we needed to do a better job of covering our hitters and trying to get our hitters more open.
"We need to learn from our performance tonight and get ourselves ready to compete on Sunday versus Miami."
Florida State setters Duygu Duzceler and Sarah Wickstrom ran an efficient Seminole offense that made only 13 attack errors on 107 attempts. Along with Walch's 12 kills, Jekaterina Stepanova and Visnja Djurdjevic both put down 10 kills and five total Seminoles hit over .300.
Duke will continue its two-match road streak on Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. bout against No. 19 Miami. The Hurricanes suffered their only loss of the season last weekend on the road at Florida State.
