NEWTON, Mass. - Sophomore Emmie Le Marchand tallied a goal and two assists and four different Blue Devils registered goals as the ninth-ranked Duke field hockey squad earned a conference win over No. 8 Boston College, 4-2, Friday evening to move to 6-4 (2-1 ACC) on the year.
Boston College (7-4, 1-2 ACC) led in penalty corners 9-5 and outshot Duke 17-15 for the game, but the Blue Devils placed 13 shots on goal compared to nine for the Eagles. The Duke defense limited a BC offense that ranked 10th in the nation in scoring average to two goals, and redshirt senior goalkeeper Samantha Nelson made seven saves to clinch the victory.
Duke wasted little time taking the lead as junior Mary Nielsen scored her second goal of the season in the eighth minute to play to put the Blue Devils up 1-0 over the Eagles.
Junior Devon Gagliardi made it 2-0 in the 17th minute with her fifth goal on the year, deflecting in a loose ball off a penalty corner as Duke took the two-goal lead into the intermission. The Blue Devils controlled the first half of play, outshooting Boston College 10-4, while earning four penalty corners to three for the Eagles.
Just over four minutes into the second frame, freshman Jess Buttinger broke through the Eagle defense and fed a pass to Le Marchand, who converted the opportunity into Duke's third goal of the afternoon. The goal was Le Marchand's eighth of the season as she leads the Blue Devils in both goals and points (20) for the season.
After nearly 55 minutes of play, Boston College registered its first goal of the game following Courtney Tavener's rebound off a penalty corner midway through the second half. Duke came up with the answer as sophomore McKay Ross scored her first career goal to make it 4-1 with just under 10 minutes to play.
Boston College struck again in the 70th minute, but Duke kept the Eagles scoreless over the final five minutes to come away with the win.
Before returning to Durham, Duke will face No. 18 Boston University Sunday, Oct. 2. Game time is set for 1 p.m. from Boston College's Field Hockey Field in Newton, Mass. The Blue Devils return to Williams Field Saturday, Oct. 8 for a 1 p.m., bout with Maryland.
