DURHAM, N.C. – Anthony Melchionda delivered a two-out, two-run single in the top of the 11th inning to cap Boston College's 6-4 comeback victory over Duke in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The two-run single was Melchionda's third hit of the day and was part of a come-from-behind effort that saw the Eagles (13-16, 6-8 ACC) combine for four runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth to force extra innings. Boston College right fielder Matt McGovern tied the game at 4-4 with an
RBI single in the top of the ninth inning and finished 4-for-5 on the
day with two runs, including the Eagles' second run in the 11th inning.
He was one of four Eagles with multiple hits on the day.
Duke starter
Marcus Stroman, who recorded two saves earlier in the week, held Boston College to just one run on six hits over seven complete innings and left the game with a 4-1 lead. The sophomore right-hander struck out a season-high nine batters while issuing just one walk, but the Eagles rallied against Duke's bullpen after his exit.
Stroman dominated the Boston College lineup over his first six innings and faced just three batters over the minimum during that span. He struck out the side in order in the fourth inning and netted three more punchouts in the seventh. But while Boston College managed just six hits against him, the Eagles tagged eight hits off of four Duke relievers en route to the comeback.
Offensively, Duke posted double-digit hits for the fifth straight game. One of those knocks was the first career home run for freshman
David Perkins, who delivered the solo shot as part of a three-run seventh inning. The Blue Devils also tagged four doubles, including the team-leading 10th two-bagger of the season for freshman
Chris Marconcini, who hit .538 in the series with five RBI.
Perkins started the scoring for Duke with an RBI groundout in the second inning that followed a leadoff double by
Will Piwnica-Worms and a base hit by
Anthony D'Alessandro. Stroman took that lead and ran with it, giving up just three hits – compared to five strikeouts – over his first four innings.
The Eagles had a chance to tie the game in the top of the fifth after a leadoff triple landed Mike Sudol on third base with no outs, but Stroman got some help from his defense to escape the jam unharmed. Stroman struck out the next batter for the first out, and then induced a ground ball from eight-hitter Matt Hamlet. Sudol took off for the plate on contact, but Perkins fielded the grounder at second base and fired a strike to freshman catcher
Mike Rosenfeld, who blocked the plate with his left leg and applied the tag for the second out. On the next pitch, Hamlet tried to steal second, but Rosenfeld gunned him down by three steps to end the inning.
The Eagles put the leadoff runner on base in the top of the sixth thanks to a Duke fielding error, but Rosenfeld helped Stroman out of the jam again to keep Duke's 1-0 lead intact. After a one-out walk put runners on first and second, Stroman fired a breaking ball in the dirt that Rosenfeld blocked and fielded in front of the plate. Tom Bourdon, who led off the inning and was on second base on the pitch, took off for third when the ball hit the dirt, but stopped midway after seeing Rosenfeld's block. Rosenfeld then fired a strike to third base, and
Jordan Betts ran Bourdon down on the way back to second for the second out.
Stroman then worked a scoreless sixth, but the Eagles finally broke through with a two-out RBI single from Marc Perdios in the top of the seventh that tied the game at 1-1. Perdios came to the plate with Melchionda on second base after the Boston College cleanup hitter led the inning off with a double to right field. Stroman struck out two straight batters after the double and took Perdios to a 2-2 count, but Perdios won the battle when he laced a ground ball into left field that scored Melchionda.
Duke rallied and sent Stroman out with a lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to jump ahead 4-1. Perkins started the rally with a leadoff home run that just missed hitting the Durham Bull cutout standing atop the 32-foot wall in left field. From there, Boston College reliever Nate Bayuk struggled with his command and gave up two singles, an intentional walk and an RBI walk before reliever Kyle Prohovich took the mound and hit Piwnica-Worms for Duke's third run.
The seventh inning marked the end of Stroman's start, however, and the Eagles went to work on Duke's bullpen in his absence. Boston College plated two runs in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to 4-3 and then tied the game on an RBI single by McGovern in the top of the ninth.
Prohovich settled down from there and shut Duke out over his next three frames, eventually grabbing the win in extra innings.
Boston College had another chance to take the lead in the top of the 10th after Melchionda led off the inning with a double, but Duke junior
David Putman entered the game and stranded two runners to keep the score at 4-4. Putman, who came through with two strikeouts in a similar situation in the eighth inning against UNC Greensboro on Wednesday, struck out Perdios looking and then induced a groundout from Hamlet to end the threat.
After Prohovich retired Duke in order in the bottom of the 10th, however, the Eagles finally broke through with a two-out, two-run single from Melchionda in the top of the 11th to take a 6-4 lead. The two-out knock to right field gave the Eagles all the run support they needed, as catcher Garret Smith then took the mound and retired the side in order to secure the victory and his team-leading sixth save of the season.
Up next for Duke is a midweek matchup at home against Davidson on Tuesday, April 12, at 6 p.m. That game was originally scheduled at Davidson, but will now be played at Duke's home venue of Jack Coombs Field. Following that contest, the Blue Devils will travel to Charlottesville, Va., where they will face No. 1 Virginia.
