BLACKSBURG, Va.- The final day of the ACC Indoor Championships has come to a close with Duke athletes adding an impressive collection of hardware. The men and women had eight members stand on the podium by the end of the meet. As a team the men finished seventh with 47 points and the women tied for sixth with 45.
Saturday's session featured senior Mike Schallmo in the shot put. A strong third round throw of 56'-8” was good enough for second but the senior added an another half inch on his final toss of the competition. Junior Michael Barbas also threw for the Blue Devils, his second round of throw of 56'1.75” was good enough for a fourth place finish. Michelle Anumba competed in the women's shot and achieved a seventh place finish with a 49'9.25” throw.
The most exciting part of the day for the Blue Devils was the men and women's mile run. Seniors Kate Van Buskirk and Ryan McDermott both competed hard for the gold medal, but came up short by less than a combined half a second. Amanda Winslow of Florida State University edged out Van Buskirk's 4:40.49 while Michael Hammond of Virginia Tech was ahead of McDermott's 4:07.56. Also in the mile, freshman Rebecca Craigie took seventh with a 4:54.78.
Senior Devotia Moore and junior Cydney Ross competed in the 800 meter with Moore capturing another third place finish with a season best time of 2:07.51. Ross was able to grab a point for Duke in eighth with a 2:09.99.
In the 3,000 meters, Madeline Morgan was able to score with a seventh place finish. She ran a 9:30.41 while Josh Lund took eighth in the men's race with a time of 8:08.98.
The meet closed out with the running of the 4x400 meter relay. Moore and Ross came back to run the final two legs alongside LaCresha Styles and Brittany Whitehead to finish seventh with a time of 3:43.88.
