Hough, in his first collegiate action, posted a 5-0 mark en route to the 141-pound crown. On his way to capturing top honors Hough registered three major decisions and two falls, including one in the title bout against Eric Tozzi of Belmont Abbey. His closest match of the day came against Limestone's Michael Magaha as he cruised to the 14-6 major decision.
At 149 pounds, Duke had a pair of standouts in Kerr-Brown and freshman Marcus Cain competing. Similar to Hough, Kerr-Brown cruised through to the finals with two major decisions, a fall, and an 11-4 decision. Cain, meanwhile, was equally as impressive with two technical falls and a fall before outlasting Seiji Borja of Newberry, 7-2, in the semifinal round. In the championship match, Kerr-Brown picked up the win with a medical forfeit by Cain. Between the Kerr-Brown and Cain, Duke finished with two falls, two technical falls, two major decisions and two decisions.
Also garnering runner-up honors at the tournament were freshmen Conner Hartmann at 197 pounds and Brendan Walsh at heavyweight. Randy Roden and Trey Adamson took third and fourth, respectively, from 174 pounds, while Michael Chapman was fourth at heavyweight.
Getting a taste of their first collegiate action, Hartmann and Walsh combined for a 7-2 overall record to take second place. Hartmann cruised through to the semifinals with a fall and a technical fall before picking up his second pin of the day to advance to the championship bout. Going up against Daniel Scanlan of Limestone in the final match, Hartmann lost a valiant effort in a 7-4 decision.
Walsh outlasted his first two opponents in 9-2 and 3-2 decisions, respectively, to earn a right to wrestle against Denzel Vaughan in the semifinals. The Duke rookie held on for a 3-1 victory before falling to Chris Rowland 2-1 in the title match.
Chapman, after losing his opening match, rebounded in a big way to advance all the way to the consolation finals. He pinned Bret Haley in the first consolation match and then proceeded to outduel his foes in narrow victories, including a double-overtime victory. After posting narrow 6-5 and 5-3 decisions, Chapman narrowly lost to UNC Pembroke's Chris Giddens, 5-2 to take fourth place overall.
Roden and Adamson used the same path at 174 pounds, winning three matches apiece before falling in the championship semifinals. Adamson registered a fall in 1:49 to start the day and then picked up two more decisions. At the other end of the bracket, Roden posted a major decision, a decision and a fall for a spot in semifinals. The duo met in the consolation title bout with Roden winning on a medical forfeit.
Duke will compete again November 13 at the Wolfpack Open on the campus of NC State.
