CLEMSON, S.C. - In a showdown between two of the top middle blockers in the ACC, Clemson junior Sandra Adeleye knocked down 19 kills without making a single attack error to lead Clemson past Duke 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-22) on Friday evening in Jervey Gymnasium.
Adeleye and Duke middle blocker Christiana Gray - who both rank among the top 10 in the ACC in hitting percentage - took over the match for their respective squads. Both led their teams in kills, and Adeleye led Clemson (15-8, 7-5 ACC) with an errorless .576 hitting percentage. Gray hit .533 for Duke with 18 kills and only two errors on 30 attacks.
Duke had trouble containing Adeleye, who 5-for-11, 9-for-12 and 5-for-10 in the three sets, but the Tigers had just as much difficulty stopping Gray who went 4-for-5, 8-for-13 and 6-for-12. The difference came from the supporting cast where outside hitter Serenat Yaz contributed 13 kills and 6-3 middle hitter Alexa Rand put back 11 blocks.
"Clemson brought their usual strong block tonight and did good job sustaining their level of play throughout the match," Duke head coach Jolene Nagel said. "Our team has been great about making progress as we've gone through practice and competitions, but tonight I felt like for the first time this season, we regressed because we didn't come out and complete like we're capable."
Rand - the number two blocker in the ACC - gave the Tigers the edge in the blocking game where they amassed 14.5 stops in the three-set win. Clemson had at least four blocks in every set and temporarily took over the ACC blocks lead with 240.0 on the season
Duke (14-7, 8-4 ACC) gave the Tigers trouble in every set and came within one point of tying game two at 24-23 and two points of tying set three at 24-22. Duke rallied from a 23-14 deficit in set two and a 21-16 deficit in set two, but both times Clemson spoiled the late rallies.
Sophia Dunworth and Jeme Obeime both contributed nine kills for Duke, but the Tigers forced the Blue Devils into a .163 hitting percentage. Duke libero Ali McCurdy added to her ACC-leading digs total with 17 more pickups, and setter Kellie Catanach collected her team-leading ninth double-double of the year with 12 digs and 39 assists. Catanach, who ranks third on Duke's all-time assists list, now needs just 36 more assists to reach 5,000 for her career.
Catanach will get a shot to reach that mark on Sunday, Oct. 30, when the Blue Devils face Georgia Tech at 1 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga. The match will air live on ESPN3.com.
