ATLANTA, Ga. -- All-American setter Kellie Catanach recorded her 5,000th career assist while leading Duke to a 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 15-25, 25-20) road victory over Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon in O'Keefe Gymnasium.
Catanach dished out 44 assists against the Yellow Jackets and led Duke (15-7, 9-4 ACC) to a .336 hitting percentage. She set to four hitters who reached double-digit kills, including All-ACC middle blocker Christiana Gray who continued her torrid pace with a team-high 15 kills and a .636 hitting percentage.
The reigning ACC Player of the Year, Catanach also chipped in eight digs, two aces and six kills without making an attack error. She is on pace for the best year of her career averaging 1.04 kills, a .250 hitting percentage and a .412 set percentage which would all be career highs.
"It was really exciting to see our team come out and compete like we did in order to win a tough match at Georgia Tech," head coach Jolene Nagel said. "I think the entire team responded to the challenge that was in front of them today. It was neck-and-neck in each of the games, and our team did a good job of taking advantage of opportunities that were given to them and also making some things happen for themselves.
"It was a great team effort from the sidelines to the court, and I think the entire team really worked very hard in preparation for this match today."
Duke attackers Sophia Dunworth, Amanda Robertson and Jeme Obeime all took advantage of Catanch's hot hand with at least 10 kills apiece. Obeime logged a .320 hitting percentage, Robertson netted her seventh double-double of the year and Dunworth finished with 13 kills to move into sole possession of 10th place on Duke's career kills list. Middle blocker Chelsea Cook was also efficient, connecting on five of her six attacks for an .833 hitting percentage.
Georgia Tech outside hitter Monique Mead was dominant on the other side of the net and totaled 27 kills on a .362 hitting percentage. Mead, who ranks among the top five in the country in kills per set, took 58 attacks accounted for over 40 percent of her team's total kills and made only six errors on 58 attacks.
Duke kept the rest of Georgia Tech's lineup in check, however, thanks in part to All-ACC libero Ali McCurdy who collected 15 digs to improve her ACC-leading total to 466 on the season. McCurdy, who ranks among the top 10 nationally in digs per set, has recorded 10 or more digs in all but one match this season and in 53 of her 56 career matches as a Blue Devil.
Duke returns to Cameron Indoor Stadium next weekend for an ACC homestand against Virginia and Virginia Tech on Nov. 4-5. The matches tip off at 7 p.m., and admission is free for both.
