Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski “We won a hard fought game. They played hard and we played well and hard. I am proud of our big guys that they were able to hang in there. That was the best we've rebounded all year. The Plumlees had 10 and eight rebounds and
Ryan Kelly had eight and
Josh Hairston gave us good minutes, got a couple offensive rebounds and all nine guys contributed for us.”
“They are learning their roles. It's not like a play where you're Mr. Smith and you're Mrs. Jones and this is what you do. We are trying to figure out what they do. These are games that a lot of teams played in November and December. We played a really hard schedule with the other team. And then a couple teams lost their guys so we had a couple easier games and we come into the ACC with a really good record but this team wasn't the team that beat those teams. This team wasn't the team that was in those situations. The ACC now is more like the late November early December games for us where our guys are learning and we are learning about them, and roles will develop as a result of that.”
“Those seven guys, outside of Nolan and Kyle, they just need experience. They need to do things like they did tonight and they need to do it a few more times so then they say, 'that's what I do. It's not what I did on Jan. 19 against State that what's I do.' That's how roles are developed.”
Duke Sophomore Ryan Kelly“I just wanted to come in and be aggressive. I couldn't be under .500 in my hometown any longer after last year. I just went out there and tried to make plays for our team and we came out with a win.”
“I have been working a lot during and after practice getting tons and tons of shots up. I had gone through a few games where I wasn't hitting as well, but I am always confident in my shot and I think the next one is going in.”
Duke Sophomore Mason Plumlee“I feel like I have been rebounding, but I could do more. I feel like I have been playing well. I just got to keep it going. I feel like the offense will come and I just got to keep playing hard.”
“I'd say absolutely. So far this year I say this is one of the moment complete games we have had as a team from everybody. Everybody came in, I don't know for sure, but I think everybody scored, and more so than that everybody contributed something.”
“Like Coach [K] said after the game, Tyler's shot and Josh's shot, those were huge shots. They were both 1-for-1 that is tough to do because I remember being in that position last year, and those are tough things to do, and they came in and had a lot of confidence and that helps us.”
“I thought he played awesome. He was all over the boards. He finished inside, so I thought that was great.”
Duke Senior Nolan Smith“To just play together on both ends, we did that to make it tough on them to score. The big guys did a great job on Tracy Smith in the first half making it hard for him to score. When you contain one of their best players you have a great chance of winning.”
“Stay composed. On the road we know it's going to be tough, teams are going to make their runs, and for this team to get their first road win and withstand a team's run on their home court was huge for us. It is going to be a big boost for us going forward.”
“It was exciting for us to finally come out and start the game and play a whole first half the way we should and it ended up translating into a hard fought 40 minute game for us."
