With the score tied at one-all at the end of regulation, Duke prepared for its third consecutive game decided in extra periods. Despite playing 100 minutes the day before at Wake Forest, the Blue Devils came out in control of the overtime period and did not allow a Drexel shot. After Duke had placed two shots on goal in overtime, Ferger slipped through the Dragon defense on the right side and freshman Emmie Le Marchand delivered the pass. Ferger then dodged the charging Drexel goalkeeper to plant her shot in the bottom corner of the cage for the win.
"I don't think anyone will argue the fact that we are very fit with two overtime games in a row," head coach Beth Bozman said. "This is not exactly how we wanted the game to go, but I think we toughed it out and fixed things in the second half. We got a lot of shots again and we just need to continue to work on our finishing. It was a really character-building weekend for us."
Le Marchand also provided a spark early in the game, tallying the first goal of the contest to give Duke the 1-0 lead at the 27-minute mark. Drexel tied the game four minutes later as Christina Mastropaolo tapped in a rebound off a penalty corner shot.
For the game, the Blue Devils outshot the Dragons, 17-11, and earned seven penalty corners to six for Drexel. In goal, senior Samantha Nelson turned back three Drexel shots to earn the win, while her counterpart, Jenna Phillips, stopped 11 Duke shots during the game.
The Blue Devils return to action next weekend with back-to-back home games. Duke hosts No. 12 Ohio State Saturday, September 18 at 1 p.m. before welcoming No. 17 Old Dominion to Williams Field Sunday, September 19 at 1 p.m.
