Jones found the back of the cage in the 30th minute, off an assist from freshman Brenna Rescigno, to pull Duke within 2-1, but Ohio State would add another goal midway through the second half to secure the 3-1 win.
"Ohio State is a really talented team and we knew they were going to be tough today," head coach Beth Bozman said. "Unfortunately I don't think [Ohio State] saw Duke field hockey. It was a very lackluster performance. We just didn't stick to our game plan individually and we did not really perform today."
The Buckeyes held the advantage in both shots (15-6) and penalty corner (13-5) for the game. Ohio State got on the board first at the 18:16 mark after capitalizing on a penalty corner opportunity and stretched its margin to 2-0 six minutes later, entering the half with a 2-1 lead.
"Ohio State is the best team in the Big Ten," Bozman added. "We were hanging in with them and not playing well for most of the game. We need to fix some things on the field. If we had, I think the results would have been different against a really talented team."
Duke will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 19, hosting Old Dominion in a 1 p.m. contest at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
