Duke (4-4, 0-1 ACC) outshot Old Dominion (2-6, 0-0 CAA) by a margin of 9-5 and earned 14 penalty corners to the Lady Monarchs' six, but were unable to dig out of a 2-0, second-half deficit against a defense-oriented ODU squad.
"Old Dominion played as we expected them to," head coach Beth Bozman said. "They're a really strong defensive team, dropping their team back in our attacking third. We certainly had a lot of opportunities, 14 corners and to only capitalize on one is just a little disappointing for us."
After a scoreless first half, Old Dominion broke a 0-0 stalemate in the 38th minute of play and extended its lead to 2-0 at the 55:11 mark. The Blue Devil attack responded just over a minute later as junior Rhian Jones converted a penalty corner shot for her second goal in as many games. Junior Stefanie Fee and freshman Emmie Le Marchand assisted on the score to cut the lead to one with just under 15 minutes to play.
However, Old Dominion was able to prevent a game-tying goal in the final minutes of play to escape with a one-goal victory.
The Blue Devils are set to host top-ranked North Carolina at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium Saturday, Sept. 25 in a 1 p.m. match-up of ACC rivals. Duke will also face Richmond next weekend as the Blue Devils take on the Spiders Sunday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m.
