Wake Forest (5-1, 1-0 ACC) appeared to have the win in hand with a one-goal lead as the clock ticked under a minute. However, Duke (3-2, 0-1 ACC) refused to give in and with 41 seconds remaining, Amsley beat her defender on the right side and slipped her shot past the outstretched Demon Deacon goalkeeper to force overtime.
"We've been working so hard on just fighting and clawing for goals," head coach Beth Bozman said. "Chelsea's just such a special athlete and she dug deep and gave us a really blue-collar effort."
With the score knotted at two goals apiece, the Blue Devils and Demon Deacons battled through two overtime periods without a game-winning goal. The contest was still undecided after five penalty strokes from each team and the squads next went to a sudden victory stroke-off, where Wake Forest was able to emerge the winner.
"It's extremely disappointing to go to quadruple overtime and lose a game," Bozman said. "We've been talking all preseason about how hard we need to fight and the effort we need to put in for a team win. I think we showed that today even in the strokes. Subs off the bench, who weren't playing, scored goals and we just unfortunately fell short in the sudden death."
Duke was the first to strike on the afternoon as the Blue Devils wasted no time taking a 1-0 lead on their first shot of the game. Duke was awarded a penalty corner in the sixth minute and freshman Brenna Rescigno, making her collegiate debut, drilled the shot into the back of the cage for her first career goal. Senior Sarah Schoffstall and junior Stefanie Fee assisted on the score.
Wake Forest would answer six minutes later as sophomore Lizzie Rae deflected a Kari Walkley cross into the goal. Junior Adelaide Knott gave the Demon Deacons the lead at the 28:57 mark and Wake Forest entered halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
Both teams were evenly matched throughout, registering 17 shots each, while Duke held a 12-10 advantage in penalty corners on the day.
Duke will open the home portion of its schedule tomorrow, Sunday, September 21 as the Blue Devils host No. 13 Drexel at 1 p.m. at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
